Barry O Byrne joined HSBC in 2017 and now serves as Chief Executive of Global Commercial Banking. In this role, he leads a diverse team of colleagues who serve 1.3 million business customers in 53 countries and territories, ranging from small enterprises focused on their home market to large international companies. Together, they help entrepreneurial businesses grow by meeting their financial needs, facilitating cross-border trade and payments, and connecting them to opportunities through their global network. His goal is to build the commercial bank of tomorrow by investing in digital transformation, empowering his people, and collaborating with customers to achieve a more sustainable future for all. This journey started for him in his last role, when he led strategic change initiatives for HSBC Commercial Banking as Chief Operating Officer. Prior to HSBC, he spent 19 years with GE Capital, where he held CEO positions in Italy, France, and the UK and served on boards in the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Spain. He is comfortable working in English and French, but his Italian now needs improvement. His life and career started in Ireland, where Barry O Byrne gained a degree in Business Studies and French from the University of Limerick. Today, his home is in Hong Kong, where he is a husband and a father to three wonderful daughters.
