About Matt Hammerstein

Matt Hammerstein grew up on a small farm in rural Ohio (USA). A mix of athletics (genetic luck!), curiosity, and courage took him from there to Yale to study Engineering. That transition taught him a lot about himself, what he wanted from a career, and how to stay true to that. After 10 years working as a consultant across the Americas and Europe, supporting Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Energy, and Banking clients, he switched from consulting to industry and joined Barclays. He has always framed his career decisions (to start, stay, or go) on three criteria: the people (from whom he learns); the challenges (the bigger the better for personal development); and the opportunity to make a real difference through the work he does. Eighteen years into his tenure at Barclays, he has never felt more energized about all three. What they do matters – only a few areas of work matter more in terms of the difference they make in people’s lives when done well – and he is privileged to work with thousands of people equally passionate about that. When he became CEO of Barclays UK in 2019, the team decided to reset how they engage with each other, their customers, clients, and external stakeholders. They aimed to have more honest conversations about the realities their industry faces, how Barclays UK can lead and support the UK through that, and what it will take to get the whole organization excited about improving Barclays UK every day. They know they won’t always get everything right, but they are committed to taking responsibility and making things right when they go wrong for colleagues, customers, or clients. As Barclays UK serves the whole of UK society, he is deeply passionate about making it a truly inclusive and diverse place to work. Matt Hammerstein uses LinkedIn to connect with and highlight the great work his team does, as well as discuss issues and opportunities related to the UK economy’s transition into a more technology-enabled era. He is open to engagement, welcomes all views, especially those that help find practical ways to move forward. From time to time, his colleagues at Barclays will help ensure that he responds in a timely manner, but rest assured that everything posted is from him.
