SBS has launched the SBS AI Foundation, a sovereign AI platform designed to allow financial institutions to deploy generative and agentic AI within their own secure environments. By integrating NVIDIA’s full AI stack into core banking systems, the solution addresses the critical data residency and regulatory hurdles that have previously stalled large-scale AI adoption in banking.

What was announced

The SBS AI Foundation is built to bridge the gap between AI ambition and actual implementation, which Gartner suggests remains low due to infrastructure constraints. The platform allows banks to process sensitive customer and transaction data without routing it through external providers, maintaining compliance with GDPR and local data residency laws. It is already live in production with the Scottish Building Society on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is now available to SBS’s global client base of more than 1,500 financial institutions.

The system utilizes NVIDIA NIM microservices for the AI layer and NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails to ensure every response remains within a bank’s specific regulatory boundaries. It integrates data from across the entire SBS ecosystem, including core banking, lending, digital banking, and regulatory reporting modules. Early results from the Scottish Building Society implementation indicate approximately 30-40% faster response times with more consistent, explainable outputs that maintain the audit trails required by regulators.

The platform focuses on three primary operational areas: grounding generative AI in an institution’s own data for personalized customer onboarding, using natural language intelligence to replace traditional multi-day reporting cycles with instant insights, and providing sovereign risk intelligence with a full audit trail. The solution is designed to run on private clouds, managed clouds, or fully on-premises environments. Future updates are expected to include Agentic AI capabilities to automate multi-step banking workflows with human oversight.

"Banks want AI they can trust, explain and run wherever their data must live. By building with NVIDIA, we can give our customers that assurance without compromising on governance. We are already seeing the results from this work with our early customers, and we look forward to continuing to roll out these capabilities as we help more financial institutions take advantage of AI efficiencies."

The companies involved

SBS is a global financial technology provider supporting more than 1,500 financial institutions worldwide. The company specializes in digital transformation, offering a broad suite of tools ranging from core banking and lending to regulatory reporting. Its infrastructure is designed to help legacy institutions modernize their operations to compete with digital-first challengers. The company has a significant presence in markets with strict data residency requirements, including Europe and Africa.

NVIDIA, a dominant force in the global AI market, provides the underlying infrastructure and software stack necessary for high-performance computing. While widely known for its hardware, NVIDIA’s involvement in this partnership centers on its AI Enterprise software, including NIM and NeMo Guardrails. These tools are increasingly being integrated into vertical-specific platforms to provide the "shared intelligence layer" required for enterprise-grade AI. This collaboration marks the first deployment of NVIDIA’s full AI stack, including open Nemotron models, within a live core banking environment.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed the evolution of AI infrastructure and SBS's strategic moves closely. We recently reported on SBS Appoints US Leadership Team to Modernize Floor Plan Lending with AI-Ready Infrastructure, highlighting the company's focus on preparing lenders for automated decision-making. Additionally, the broader market's appetite for high-performance AI hardware was evidenced in our coverage of Bitget Launches Industry-First AI Compute Perpetuals for NVIDIA H100 and B200 GPUs. These developments reflect a growing trend where financial institutions are no longer just looking for AI software, but are increasingly concerned with the underlying compute and data sovereignty required to run these models safely.

What this means

This announcement signals a shift in the "AI arms race" from general-purpose cloud models to sovereign, localized infrastructure. For years, the banking sector has been paralyzed by the conflict between the efficiency of Large Language Models and the strictures of data privacy. By moving the AI to the data, rather than the data to the AI, SBS is addressing the primary bottleneck for Tier 1 and Tier 2 banks. This puts significant pressure on legacy core banking providers who lack a native, governed AI layer. The industry must now determine if "sovereign AI" will become the standard requirement for all regulated financial services.
