Press Release: OneStream Index Reveals 86% of Finance Teams Struggle to Turn AI Adoption into Enterprise Value | Featured Image by FF News

OneStream’s inaugural Forward Finance Index reveals a stark disconnect in corporate finance: while 74% of teams have adopted AI to automate manual tasks, only 14% have translated these investments into measurable enterprise value. For fintech leaders, this highlights a critical bottleneck where legacy data foundations are stalling the transition from basic automation to strategic AI-driven decision-making.

What was announced

The release of the Forward Finance Index marks a comprehensive benchmarking of 1,300 CFOs across the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The report evaluates AI readiness against the "Forward Finance Blueprint," a new operating model designed to assist finance departments in steering business strategy. The research identifies five critical pillars for AI maturity: strategy, data, workforce, operations, and IT collaboration.

The findings suggest a significant "transparency gap" within the sector. Although 71% of executives expressed confidence in their team's ability to provide trusted data, only 40% classified their financial reporting data as fully transparent—meaning it can be clearly traced, explained, and validated. This lack of traceability is a primary hurdle, with four in ten finance executives reporting that data quality issues regularly delay or block AI projects. Currently, only 6% of finance organizations are considered "Leaders" across all five maturity areas, while 52% are classified as "Followers."

The financial stakes of this maturity gap are substantial. OneStream’s research indicates that finance-led insights currently drive decisions worth an average of $1.6 billion for organizations annually. Furthermore, effective early-warning signals have helped organizations prevent an average of more than $10 million in potential operational and financial losses. Despite these high stakes, only 15% of organizations have a fully embedded AI skills program, even though 66% of respondents believe failing to prepare their workforce will render their organization irrelevant within five years.

"Every Finance team wants to move faster with AI, but AI depends on the very data foundations most organizations haven't built. Deploying AI on top of data you can't fully trace, explain, or trust compounds enterprise risk as systems act more autonomously. A trusted, unified data environment is what turns AI from a promising pilot into insights leaders can act on with confidence. Closing that foundational gap is what separates the leaders from the pack."

What this means

The industry is currently trapped in "pilot purgatory," where AI is used for low-level task automation but fails to influence high-level strategy. The Index exposes a dangerous "delusion gap": CFOs are confident in their data, yet they admit they cannot trace or explain it. This creates a massive liability as AI systems gain more autonomy. For the fintech sector, the pressure is no longer on the "intelligence" of the models, but on the "integrity" of the data pipelines. Vendors who cannot guarantee end-to-end data lineage will likely see their AI tools relegated to basic administrative functions, while the real market value migrates to platforms that can provide a transparent, audit-ready foundation for autonomous finance.
