Coast has secured $35 million in growth equity to transform its fleet-focused payment platform into a comprehensive financial operating system for the physical economy. For fintech professionals, this highlights the shift from generic corporate cards toward vertical-specific tools that integrate deep telematics and industry workflows to capture spend in underserved sectors.

What was announced

Coast announced a $35 million growth equity round led by Thomvest Ventures. The funding includes participation from new backers Intuit Ventures, Small World Capital, and Alpha Square Group, alongside a significant roster of existing investors such as Accel, Insight Partners, and ICONIQ Growth. The capital is earmarked for the development of an expanded financial suite tailored to businesses in the physical economy, including construction, plumbing, landscaping, electrical, pest control, solar, transportation, energy, oil and gas, and utilities.

The company plans to use the proceeds to scale its customer base and invest in AI-powered expense automation. Specifically, Coast is launching new Bill Pay and Accounts Payable products designed to bring vendor invoices into the same environment as card spend. This move aims to provide a unified view of outgoing capital for field service businesses. The expansion comes as the AI data center boom drives increased demand in the physical sector; job postings for HVAC engineers have risen nearly 78% since 2022, while openings for electricians and construction specialists are up 30%.

Coast’s platform, which began with a fuel card, differentiates itself through deep integration with fleet and field service tools. By partnering with telematics providers like Samsara and Fleetio, the system uses vehicle location and odometer data to validate transactions. This allows operators to identify off-route fuel purchases or automatically shut off cards based on real-time driver identity and location data. The platform already offers vehicle- and driver-level visibility, job costing, and automated reconciliation for accounting teams.

"The millions of field businesses that keep the physical economy running still lack a financial platform built around the way they work,"

The companies involved

Coast is a financial platform specifically engineered for the "physical economy," serving sectors such as construction, HVAC, plumbing, and transportation. Originally launched with a focus on fuel cards, the company has expanded its remit to include corporate cards, expense management, and bill pay. The firm is backed by a significant roster of venture capital heavyweights, including Insight Partners and Accel, both of which have extensive histories in the fintech sector with dozens of previous investments tracked by FF News.

Thomvest Ventures, the lead investor in this growth round, initially backed Coast in 2024. The investor group also includes Better Tomorrow Ventures and The Fintech Fund, alongside corporate and strategic investors like Synchrony and RXR. ICONIQ Growth and Alpha Square Group also participated in the round, further diversifying the company's institutional backing. The addition of Intuit Ventures as a new investor connects Coast to the broader ecosystem of small business accounting software. These backers represent a mix of traditional venture capital and strategic partners from the financial services and real estate industries, positioning Coast within a network of firms that understand the operational complexities of field-based businesses.

What this means

This announcement signals a maturing of the "vertical fintech" trend, moving beyond simple credit cards into specialized control planes. By targeting the "physical economy," Coast is positioning itself to capture the massive tailwinds generated by the AI data center boom, which is straining the capacity of electrical and construction firms. The pressure is now on generic expense management platforms that lack the telematics and job-costing depth required by these specialized sectors. The key question for the market is whether horizontal giants can build deep enough integrations to compete with these vertical-first operating systems before they lock in the market.
