Mashreq has launched NEO BIZ in Pakistan, a digital-first banking platform specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and self-employed individuals. This move targets a massive, underserved market of over seven million businesses, representing a significant push for digital financial inclusion in a region where formal credit access remains a critical bottleneck for economic growth.

What was announced

The launch of NEO BIZ introduces a dedicated digital banking proposition to Pakistan’s 7.14 million micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). These businesses contribute nearly 40% of the country’s GDP and 30% of exports, yet they face significant hurdles in accessing formal financing. As of December 2025, outstanding SME financing in Pakistan stood at approximately PKR 882 billion, highlighting a substantial gap in the market that Mashreq aims to address through digital-first services.

NEO BIZ is designed to simplify financial management by allowing eligible businesses to open and manage accounts digitally, reducing the need for physical branch visits. The platform integrates business banking, payments, and collections into a single ecosystem. Beyond core banking, the roadmap for NEO BIZ includes the introduction of business debit and virtual cards, payroll solutions, and invoice-based payments.

The platform is also set to incorporate Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) capabilities and strategic partnerships. This phased approach will eventually include value-added services such as bookkeeping, supply chain solutions, tax facilitation, transaction analytics, and cash flow-based financing. Distribution will occur through a combination of digital channels, strategic partnerships, and "phygital" touchpoints to reach a diverse SME base across the country.

"Across our international markets, we have seen how digital-first banking models can transform the way businesses operate, improving efficiency, transparency and access to financial services. NEO BIZ builds on this global experience, combining strong commercial capabilities with a scalable platform designed to meet the needs of SMEs. Pakistan represents a high-potential market and NEO BIZ is an important step in extending our global business banking proposition into a rapidly evolving digital economy."

The companies involved

Mashreq is one of the leading financial institutions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Headquartered in the United Arab Emirates, the bank has established a significant international footprint, positioning itself as a pioneer in digital transformation within the banking sector. Mashreq Bank Pakistan operates as the local entity, led by CEO Muhammad Hamayun Sajjad, focusing on bringing the parent company’s global expertise to the Pakistani market.

The institution has historically focused on innovation to differentiate itself in a competitive regional landscape. By launching NEO BIZ, Mashreq is leveraging its experience in digital-only propositions to capture the SME segment, which is often overlooked by traditional brick-and-mortar institutions. The bank's strategy involves moving beyond traditional lending to become a "business enabler" through integrated ecosystems. This approach reflects a broader market trend where financial institutions are evolving into technology-led platforms that offer a suite of operational tools alongside core financial products, aiming to secure long-term loyalty from the growing entrepreneurial class in emerging economies.

What FF News has reported before

Mashreq has been consistently active in the digital innovation space, as previously covered by FF News. In October 2026, the bank collaborated with IBM to Mashreq and IBM Pilot Agentic AI to Revolutionize Software Engineering in Digital Banking. This followed a September 2026 announcement regarding an expanded partnership with Traydstream and Mashreq Expand Partnership to Automate Global Trade Finance, further demonstrating the bank's commitment to digitizing complex financial workflows. Additionally, Mashreq’s broader ecosystem involvement was highlighted when Taurus Bridges Connectivity to Swift’s Blockchain Ledger for 24/7 Cross-Border Payments, a move that aligns with the bank's focus on modernizing international transaction capabilities.

What this means

The launch of NEO BIZ in Pakistan is a direct challenge to the country's traditional banking sector, which has struggled to provide scalable credit and digital tools to the MSME segment. By integrating BaaS and bookkeeping into a banking app, Mashreq is moving the needle from "banking as a service" to "banking as an operating system." This puts pressure on local incumbents to accelerate their own digital transformations or risk losing the most dynamic part of the economy. The success of this initiative will likely depend on how effectively Mashreq can navigate Pakistan’s regulatory landscape while bridging the gap between formal finance and the informal economy.
