Nobody Wakes Up Wanting a Better Subledger

Ask a room of CFOs how many of them have a subledger problem and almost no hands go up. Ask the same room what their single biggest problem in finance is, and the answer is near-universal: the data is a mess. Those two answers, Mike Dolan argues, describe the same thing — most people just haven't been given the vocabulary to connect them.

In this segment, host Mark Aubin asks Dolan, Partner at Ernst & Young, how he actually opens the conversation with a client who has never framed their problem this way. His pitch is disarmingly simple: keep every control and design principle the general ledger is loved for, and move them upstream — double-entry accounting in an immutable, tamper-proof store, sitting before the GL rather than after it. He also explains why organisations don't already have this, and what changed in the last decade to make it viable. Adrian Mustafa, Product Director at SAP Fioneer, brings the product side of that shift.

There's a telling aside near the end about just how under-documented this field remains — try buying a book on subledgers and see how far you get. Follow the series as the panel gets specific about what a modern Cloud Accounting Subledger has to do.
