AI Is Only as Good as the Ledger Underneath It

Spotlight on SAP Fioneer: AI Is Only as Good as the Ledger Underneath It | Video still | FF News

Finance teams across banking and financial services are being pushed to their limits. As Mike Dolan (EY) notes in the discussion, CFOs are being asked to deliver “more and more and more with less and less and less,” even as regulatory demands, new accounting bases, product launches and M&A activity continue to accelerate. The expectations placed on finance organisations keep rising, while budgets and headcount move in the opposite direction.

This widening gap is exposing a deeper structural issue: much of the finance technology stack simply isn’t built for today’s pace of change. As Dolan explains, many core systems, from securities and derivatives accounting to loan accounting are “under‑supported” or effectively “end‑of‑life” — the result of vendors failing to modernise decades‑old software for cloud‑native environments. CFOs want granular, auditable, well‑organised data, but legacy general‑ledger‑centric architectures aren't able to deliver it.

The conversation with SAP Fioneer and EY highlights a clear industry change. Finance leaders are recognising that outdated systems can’t absorb the pressure any longer. To stay ahead, organisations are turning toward modern sub‑ledger architectures that provide the detail, transparency and data quality needed not only for reporting, but for emerging capabilities like AI. The demand for lightweight, cloud‑native finance technology has never been higher.
