Digital challenger Tandem has overhauled its senior leadership team to accelerate a new investor-backed strategy centered on sustainable finance. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant scaling effort by a purpose-led bank aiming to dominate the UK’s green lending market while fortifying its executive risk and digital infrastructure for long-term growth.

What was announced

Tandem has appointed Simon Bowen as Chief Risk Officer. Bowen, an ACMA-qualified leader, joins from Hodge Bank where he served as CRO, bringing 25 years of experience from Lloyds Banking Group and Principality Building Society. Supporting this function is Natalie Trist, who joins as Director of Credit Risk Strategy following credit leadership roles at HSBC, Close Brothers, Secure Trust Bank, and Vanquis Banking Group.

On the cultural front, Kevin Purcell has been named Chief People Officer. With 30 years of experience, including roles at Barclays and UBS Investment Bank, Purcell joins from Secure Trust Bank. He succeeds Catherine Diamond, who oversaw Tandem’s recognition as a Sunday Times Best Place to Work for two consecutive years.

The bank is also restructuring its business units. Darvish Heshejin, formerly Director of Strategy and Proposition, becomes Managing Director of Home Improvement Lending. He is tasked with scaling a proposition that is approaching £1bn in green lending and launching a revamped marketplace. He succeeds Julian Nutley, the founder of Allium Money (acquired by Tandem in 2020), who will transition to a Senior Adviser role in September.

Finally, Tom Ellmers has seen his remit expanded to Managing Director of Deposits and Digital Experience. This new consolidated structure brings deposits, the Tandem app, brand, customer experience, and digital marketing under a single executive leadership point to streamline the bank's digital interface.

"Tandem is entering a defining and important next stage of growth, backed by a clear investor-supported strategy and with ambition to scale our impact, and continued investment in sustainable finance. These changes bring together our risk, people, lending, and digital teams under leaders with a proven track record, as we invest in the next phase of our growth."

Neil Chandler, CEO of Tandem.

The companies involved

Tandem has positioned itself as a leading digital challenger bank in the UK with a specific focus on helping customers transition to more sustainable lifestyles. Its growth in the green lending space was significantly bolstered by the 2020 acquisition of Allium Money, a specialist green lender. This acquisition allowed Tandem to integrate established home improvement lending expertise directly into its digital banking ecosystem.

The talent influx for this expansion draws heavily from established UK financial institutions. Hodge Bank, where Simon Bowen previously served, is a specialist provider known for its presence in the savings and mortgage markets. Secure Trust Bank, the former home of both Kevin Purcell and Natalie Trist, is a long-standing UK retail bank that has recently been active in expanding its own digital partnerships and commercial finance facilities. By pulling leadership from these firms, Tandem is blending the agility of a digital challenger with the regulatory and operational discipline of traditional specialist lenders.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the activity of the institutions Tandem is now drawing talent from. We previously reported on Secure Trust Bank's strategic moves, including their first deposit aggregator partnership with Hargreaves Lansdown. Our coverage also noted leadership transitions at the firm, such as when Secure Trust Bank appointed Vicki Baker as Chief People Officer. Additionally, we highlighted the bank's role in the wider fintech ecosystem through its £10m facility for PayItMonthly, demonstrating the high-growth environment these new Tandem executives are coming from.

What this means

Tandem is moving past the "startup" phase and into a period of institutional maturity. By consolidating its digital experience and deposits under Tom Ellmers, the bank is acknowledging that a fragmented customer journey is the enemy of scale. The appointment of heavyweights from Hodge and Secure Trust Bank suggests that Tandem’s investors are demanding more rigorous risk management as the green loan book nears the £1bn milestone.

The transition of Julian Nutley to an advisory role is a classic "founder exit" maneuver, ensuring that while Darvish Heshejin brings fresh strategic eyes to the home improvement lending unit, the institutional memory of the Allium acquisition isn't lost. Watch for Tandem to leverage its new "marketplace" proposition to cross-sell green finance products to its growing deposit base.
