LHV Bank has deployed an agentic AI system for its UK retail customer email support, moving beyond the industry-standard "co-pilot" model. By automating routine enquiries from start to finish, the bank aims to provide 24/7 immediate responses while shifting human resources toward complex cases, marking a significant step in the practical application of autonomous AI in regulated finance.

What was announced

LHV Bank has transitioned its UK retail customer email support to a live agentic AI system, developed in partnership with Gradient Labs. This deployment follows a successful proof of concept conducted earlier this year and is designed to provide immediate, around-the-clock responses to common banking enquiries. The AI agent is capable of managing specific customer workflows from initiation to completion, including reporting lost cards, explaining payment details, handling transfer queries, and providing status updates on existing requests.

To maintain safety in a regulated environment, the system combines large language models with deterministic guardrails. These controls dictate which data and tools the agent can access, define specific points for human escalation, and ensure that complaints or interactions with vulnerable customers are handled according to approved procedures. A key component of the rollout is the use of Collaborate, a feature within the Gradient Labs platform that introduces software engineering discipline to AI management. This allows LHV’s operations, risk, and compliance teams to draft and test changes to the AI’s procedures in a controlled environment before they are deployed to customers. Furthermore, the bank has established that customer data is only accessed during live interactions and is never used to train the underlying models or build the agent.

"As a digital-only bank, we don't have to accept the way customer service has always been done. Others in the industry are using AI co-pilots that simply draft replies for staff to approve. This might speed up individual steps, but customer queries still sit in the same queue, and when the AI is usually right, people can start approving suggestions without checking them closely. We wanted to go further and give customers an answer straight away, while keeping our people firmly in control of how the service works and stepping in whenever a case needs them. Getting that balance right is what responsible innovation looks like to us."

The companies involved

LHV Bank is a digital-only institution operating in the UK market, backed by its parent company, LHV. The bank has positioned itself as a technology-led challenger, focusing on retail and SME banking services without the overhead of a traditional branch network. It has recently focused on expanding its UK footprint, particularly in the North of England, while leveraging its digital infrastructure to compete with established high-street lenders.

Gradient Labs is an AI technology provider that specialises in building "agentic" systems for the financial services sector. Unlike standard chatbots or generative AI tools that require constant human oversight for every output, Gradient Labs focuses on creating autonomous agents that can take responsibility for defined tasks within a controlled framework. The company’s platform is designed to integrate with existing banking operations, providing the necessary deterministic controls and audit trails required for compliance in highly regulated markets. By applying software engineering principles like version control and testing branches to AI procedures, Gradient Labs aims to bridge the gap between experimental large language models and the rigorous requirements of retail banking.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed LHV Bank’s technological and leadership evolution throughout 2026. In March, we reported that LHV Bank to Explore AI Usage With Gradient Labs to Support Retail Customers, a move that has now culminated in this full-scale launch. The bank’s leadership has also seen significant changes; we recently covered how LHV Bank Appoints Former Starling Executive Damian Thompson as CEO to Drive SME Growth, signaling a strategic push into the business banking sector.

Beyond technology, LHV has been expanding its physical presence, as seen when LHV Bank Expands Leeds Presence with New 'Northern Square Mile' Headquarters. The bank has also been active in market research, notably when LHV Bank Research Exposes UK Savings Gap: 53% of Savers Unsure if Interest Rates are Competitive, highlighting the consumer awareness issues the bank seeks to address through its retail offerings.

What this means

This move represents a shift in the AI arms race from "assistance" to "agency." While many fintechs have deployed AI co-pilots to help staff write emails faster, LHV is betting on autonomous agents that remove the human from the loop for routine tasks entirely. This puts immediate pressure on traditional banks whose customer service models still rely on unified queues, where a simple query about a lost card takes as long to reach an agent as a complex fraud case. The success of this model will depend on the robustness of the deterministic guardrails—if the AI fails to identify a vulnerable customer or misinterprets a complex request, the reputational risks are significant. However, if it holds, it sets a new benchmark for operational efficiency in retail banking.
