The Blockchain for Good Alliance (BGA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a two-year agreement to enhance cybersecurity knowledge for digital development. For fintech professionals, this partnership underscores the growing necessity of securing blockchain-based public infrastructure against AI-driven threats, ensuring that digital identity and payment systems remain resilient in emerging markets.

What was announced

The two-year programme aims to strengthen the responsible use of digital technologies by building technical expertise and governance frameworks within public institutions. The agreement was signed in Singapore at the UNDP Global Centre for Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Development by Edward Vrkić, UNDP's Resident Representative to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, and Helen Liu, Founder of BGA.

The initiative will be implemented by the UNDP Alternative Finance Lab (AltFinLab) in collaboration with BGA. It focuses on three primary areas: data protection, secure digital payments, and the security of public digital services. To achieve this, the programme will leverage BGA’s ecosystem to provide learning opportunities through the SDG Blockchain Accelerator—which is now entering its third cohort—and the Government Blockchain Academy, a capacity-building programme designed for public officials.

Furthermore, the partnership includes dedicated sessions for UNDP Country Offices and relevant government counterparts. This collaboration is intended to bridge the gap between the rapid advancement of AI-enabled cyberattacks and the complexity of the digital systems being defended. By sharing technical expertise from the private sector, the programme seeks to protect essential services and public funds managed through digital systems, including blockchain technology used for identity management, aid delivery, and public records.

The companies involved

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization tasked with helping countries eliminate poverty and achieve sustainable economic growth and human development. Within this framework, the UNDP Alternative Finance Lab (AltFinLab) explores innovative financial mechanisms to fund the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UNDP has increasingly integrated blockchain and digital safety into its development toolkit to manage public records and humanitarian aid.

The Blockchain for Good Alliance (BGA) is a global non-profit initiative dedicated to leveraging blockchain technology for societal impact. It was founded by the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, which provides the foundational support for BGA’s mission. BGA serves as a Strategic Partner of the UNDP SDG Blockchain Accelerator and is a member of the Blockchain Advisory Group (BAG), an advisory forum convened by the UNDP. This group brings together leaders from across the blockchain ecosystem to explore how decentralized technologies can contribute to digital public systems. Bybit itself is represented in these discussions by Mykolas Majauskas, who serves as Global Head of Policy at the exchange.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively tracked the UNDP’s increasing reliance on blockchain and fintech partnerships to deliver global aid. Recently, the publication reported on how the Circle Foundation Partners with UNDP and WFP to Revolutionize Humanitarian Aid via Stablecoins, highlighting the shift toward digital assets for crisis response. The BGA has also been active in regional digital safety initiatives; FF News previously covered how Bybit and Blockchain for Good Alliance Partner with Mauritius IGF to Boost Digital Trust. Additionally, the UNDP’s work in parametric insurance has been a recurring theme, with reports on how Colombia Protects 14,000 Smallholder Farmers with $20M Parametric Insurance Rollout and the Dominican Republic Launches First Parametric Insurance for Climate-Vulnerable Households demonstrate the practical application of fintech in climate resilience.

What this means

This partnership marks a critical pivot in the blockchain sector, moving away from experimental pilots toward the hardening of institutional infrastructure. As public institutions increasingly adopt blockchain for identity and payments, the industry is under immense pressure to prove that decentralized systems can withstand AI-enabled fraud and sophisticated state-level cyber threats. The reliance on private sector expertise, specifically from an alliance founded by a major exchange like Bybit, suggests that the "hard-learned" lessons of the crypto market are now being viewed as essential intelligence for global governance. It raises a significant question for the sector: can public-private partnerships scale fast enough to close the widening security gap created by AI?
