Khaleeji Bank has launched a redesigned mobile application in Bahrain, integrating open banking and family-focused financial tools. For fintech professionals, this move highlights the deepening intersection of Islamic finance and digital-first retail banking, as the institution leverages data-driven insights and gamified savings to capture a broader demographic in a competitive regional market.

What was announced

The new "Khaleeji Mobile App" represents a significant overhaul of the bank's digital interface, focusing on personalization and integrated financial management. A standout feature is "Ajyal – Khaleeji Family," a module designed to introduce children to financial literacy. Parents can assign tasks, set saving goals, and manage their children’s cards through an interactive interface, marking a first-of-its-kind experience in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The update also incorporates open banking capabilities, allowing users to view balances and transactions from other Bahraini banks within the Khaleeji interface. To support better financial health, the app provides smart insights into spending patterns and allows for the creation of specific savings goals. On the transactional side, the platform now supports fully digital financing applications, multi-currency accounts, and integration with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

To incentivise adoption, Khaleeji Bank is offering a limited-time expected return of up to 6.25% on investment deposits made through the app, featuring a Zakat exemption on the principal amount. Beyond traditional banking, the app includes lifestyle and religious services, such as a Zakat calculator and prayer times, alongside location-based merchant discounts and personalized digital gift cards for peer-to-peer transfers. The interface has been fully redesigned to prioritize intuitive access to these services, leveraging modern technology to align with individual user behavior.

"When developing the new version of the ‘Khaleeji Mobile App’, we were focused on ensuring that the experience starts with the client and what they need from their everyday banking. The app combines ease of use with integrated services, giving clients greater visibility over their finances and more control over their accounts, savings, and goals in one place, making their banking experience simpler, more flexible, and better suited to their lifestyles."

The companies involved

Khaleeji Bank is a prominent Islamic banking institution headquartered in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Operating under Shari’a-compliant principles, the bank has positioned itself as a key player in the region’s retail and corporate banking sectors. It has recently focused on aggressive digital transformation to compete with both traditional incumbents and emerging neobanks in the Middle East.

The bank’s market position is characterized by its focus on innovation within the Islamic finance framework. It has previously been recognized by global payments leaders like Visa for its rapid growth in the credit and debit card space, signaling a successful push into the consumer market. By integrating modern fintech capabilities—such as open banking and digital-only onboarding—Khaleeji Bank aims to bridge the gap between traditional religious banking requirements and the high-tech expectations of a younger, digitally-native demographic in Bahrain. Its strategy involves not just providing a ledger for transactions, but becoming a holistic financial partner for families and individual investors through a single digital banking platform.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has tracked Khaleeji Bank’s digital and strategic evolution through several key milestones. In October 2026, we covered how Tarabut and Khaleeji Bank Partner to Revolutionize Islamic Digital Banking in Bahrain, a move that laid the groundwork for the open banking features seen in the latest app release. Earlier that year, the bank expanded its retail footprint by signing an MoU with the British University of Bahrain, as reported in Khaleeji Bank and British University of Bahrain Partner for Tuition Fee Financing. Additionally, the bank’s operational success was highlighted when Visa Recognizes Khaleeji Bank for Fastest Active Card Growth in Bahrain, underscoring its momentum in the local payments market.

What this means

This launch signals that the "super-app" race in the Middle East is entering a more specialized phase. By combining open banking with niche features like a Zakat calculator and family-oriented financial literacy tools, Khaleeji Bank is moving beyond basic utility to create high-stickiness ecosystems. This puts significant pressure on regional competitors who have yet to move past simple transactional apps. The inclusion of high-yield investment offers also suggests a strategic push to migrate high-value deposits into digital channels, reducing the cost of service. The industry must now ask whether these "lifestyle" features will become the standard requirement for Islamic banks globally as they seek to retain the next generation of savers.
