Tarabut and Khaleeji Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to integrate advanced open banking and financial data analytics into the bank’s digital infrastructure. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant move toward data-driven Islamic banking in Bahrain, shifting the focus from simple account connectivity to sophisticated spending categorisation and income insights that drive customer engagement.

What was announced

The agreement was formalised during a signing ceremony at the FinTech Forward 2026 event. Mohamed Alderazi, Head of Product, Data and AI at Tarabut, and Osama Nasr, Chief Technology Officer at Khaleeji Bank, represented their respective organisations. The partnership is designed to leverage Tarabut’s technology infrastructure and software suite to modernise Khaleeji Bank’s digital banking services.

At the core of the collaboration are three primary technical capabilities: open banking connectivity, spending categorisation, and income insights. These tools are intended to help the bank move beyond basic transaction processing by turning raw financial data into actionable intelligence. By implementing these technologies, Khaleeji Bank aims to gain a more granular understanding of customer behaviour, allowing for the development of digital services that are specifically tailored to individual needs.

Under the terms of the MoU, both organisations will work to apply these technical capabilities to enhance customer experiences across the bank’s existing digital channels. This includes improving the user interface and ensuring that digital interactions are more connected and responsive to evolving market expectations. The focus on spending categorisation specifically allows for a more transparent view of financial health, which is increasingly becoming a standard requirement for competitive digital banking in the MENA region.

"This partnership builds on our existing relationship with Khaleeji Bank and expands our collaboration to enhance its digital channels and customer experience. Through our open banking and advanced financial analytics technologies, we aim to enable the Bank to make greater use of financial data to deliver more advanced and seamless banking experiences tailored to its customers’ needs."

The companies involved

Tarabut is positioned as the leading embedded finance and open banking platform within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The company provides the essential technology infrastructure that allows financial institutions and fintechs to connect and build data-driven products. Tarabut has established itself as a critical player in the regional ecosystem, facilitating the flow of financial information through regulated APIs. Its platform is designed to handle the complexities of regional regulation while providing developers with the tools needed to create modern financial applications.

Khaleeji Bank is a prominent Islamic retail bank headquartered in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The institution operates under a Shari'a-compliant model and has been active in expanding its digital footprint to meet the demands of a tech-savvy demographic. The bank has recently focused on diversifying its service offerings, ranging from traditional retail banking to specialised financing solutions. As a key player in the Bahraini market, Khaleeji Bank’s adoption of open banking technologies reflects a broader trend among Islamic financial institutions to integrate modern fintech solutions without compromising their core principles.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the growth of both entities as they scale their operations in the Gulf. In September 2026, we reported that Tarabut Secures $50M from Saudi Financial Giants to Scale Embedded Finance for SMEs, a move that significantly bolstered its capital reserves for regional expansion. This followed the company’s earlier milestone when Tarabut Inaugurates Regional Headquarters in Riyadh in late 2025.

Khaleeji Bank has also been active in the news, particularly regarding its growth and community partnerships. In July 2026, Visa Recognizes Khaleeji Bank for Fastest Active Card Growth in Bahrain, highlighting its increasing market share. Additionally, the bank has sought to innovate in the lending space, as seen when Khaleeji Bank and British University of Bahrain Partner for Tuition Fee Financing to provide targeted educational credit.

What this means

This collaboration signals a transition in the MENA open banking sector from the "connectivity phase" to the "intelligence phase." While the first wave of open banking was defined by simply establishing APIs, the focus has now shifted to what banks can actually do with the data they retrieve. Khaleeji Bank’s move puts pressure on other Islamic and traditional lenders in the region to move beyond basic account aggregation. The industry is now facing a critical question: can traditional institutions successfully integrate third-party analytics without losing control of the customer relationship? As data becomes the primary differentiator, the value of pure connectivity providers may diminish in favour of those offering deep analytical layers.
