Press Release: XConnect Launches UK Mobile Identity Fuzzy Matching to Boost Fintech Onboarding Accuracy | Featured Image by FF News

XConnect has introduced fuzzy matching for its UK Mobile Phone Match service, significantly expanding identity verification capabilities for fintechs and lenders. By integrating CAMARA KYC APIs from major UK operators, the service enables organisations to verify customers even when data is imperfect, reducing onboarding friction and manual document checks for approximately 85% of UK mobile users.

What was announced

The new fuzzy matching capability allows digital businesses to verify customer identities with greater flexibility than traditional exact-match systems. This technology assesses the similarity between records, accounting for common discrepancies such as abbreviated addresses, transposed characters, or slight variations in name spelling. This is particularly relevant for banks, fintechs, and gaming operators that require high-assurance verification without compromising the user experience during the onboarding phase.

The service leverages the CAMARA KYC Match capabilities of the UK’s three largest mobile network operators: EE, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2. By combining these with XConnect’s proprietary Mobile-to-Person Match (MPM) service, the company provides a unified identity solution. This rollout expands XConnect’s existing fuzzy matching footprint, which already includes operations in France, Canada, and Germany. For clients, the primary benefit is the consolidation of multiple operator connections into a single API. XConnect handles the complexities of operator routing, response normalisation, and service variations, ensuring a consistent experience across the UK market.

The service is expected to support roughly 85% of UK mobile numbers, subject to final operator coverage. Most existing operator migrations for UK MPM clients are slated for completion in the near future, allowing for immediate improvements in match rates and a reduction in the need for manual data entry or secondary document verification. This expansion is part of a broader Network API portfolio designed to help digital businesses balance verification accuracy with a smoother customer journey.

"Identity data rarely arrives in a perfectly identical format. A genuine customer can fail an exact match because of something as simple as an abbreviated address or a slightly different version of their name. Fuzzy matching assesses how closely the records correspond, giving clients a more realistic view of whether they belong to the same person while allowing them to retain control over the final decision."

The companies involved

XConnect, a Somos Company, operates as a global provider of numbering intelligence, mobile identity, and fraud prevention services. The organisation maintains a vast repository of telephone number data sourced from hundreds of global datasets, which it uses to support real-time routing, validation, and fraud prevention. Led by CEO & Founder Eli Katz, the company has positioned itself as a bridge between complex telecommunications infrastructure and the identity needs of the digital economy.

The service relies on partnerships with the UK’s primary mobile network operators. Vodafone is one of the world’s largest telecommunications groups, with a significant presence in the UK market and a growing focus on opening its network capabilities through APIs. Virgin Media O2, formed from the merger of two of the UK’s most prominent telcos, provides the underlying infrastructure for a large portion of the country's mobile and broadband services. EE, part of the BT Group, completes the trio of major operators involved in this rollout. Together, these companies represent the backbone of the UK’s mobile connectivity, and their participation in the CAMARA project highlights a move toward standardising how network data is used for third-party identity verification.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of network APIs and their application in secure commerce. Recently, we covered how XConnect and Honey Badger Partner to Strengthen Digital Trust via Network APIs, a collaboration that similarly focused on combining identity data with network-level intelligence. The broader trend of mobile operators monetising their data assets was also highlighted when Vodafone and Digital Virgo Partner to Secure Digital Payments via Open Gateway APIs. These developments suggest a concerted effort by the telecommunications industry to provide more robust tools for the fintech sector. By integrating these capabilities, service providers like XConnect are attempting to solve the persistent problem of balancing rigorous security with the demand for frictionless digital onboarding.

What this means

This move addresses a significant pain point in the KYC (Know Your Customer) process: the "false negative." For years, rigid matching logic has forced genuine customers into manual review queues simply because of a typo or a shortened street name. By introducing fuzzy matching at the network level, XConnect is putting pressure on traditional credit-bureau-based identity providers who may lack the real-time agility of mobile network data. It raises a broader question for the industry: as network APIs become more sophisticated, will mobile identity become the primary anchor for digital trust, superseding traditional document-based verification? The success of this approach will depend on how effectively fintechs can calibrate these "fuzzy" scores without increasing their risk appetite.
