Sumsub has launched the Sumsub Agentic AI Council in the APAC region to establish governance frameworks for autonomous AI systems. As AI agents begin making independent financial and operational decisions, fintech professionals must address the resulting accountability and security gaps to ensure these automated systems remain compliant and trustworthy in high-stakes digital environments.

What was announced

The Sumsub Agentic AI Council is a cross-sector forum designed to develop practical frameworks and shared best practices for the responsible adoption of agentic AI. Focused initially on the APAC region, the Council is currently seeking founding advisors from the fields of policy, academia, technology, and civil society. These experts will examine the conditions necessary for deploying AI agents at scale, focusing on identity, delegated authority, security, transparency, and oversight.

The initiative arrives as AI transitions from experimental tools into systems capable of planning and executing actions on behalf of users. Data indicates a rapid shift in the region; nearly 75% of APAC consumers already utilize AI for product research and discovery, while 95% of businesses are either piloting or using multi-step AI systems that require limited human intervention. The Council will operate through three distinct pillars:

  • Adopt: Exploring applications in the digital economy, specifically regarding fraud prevention, compliance, and operational efficiency.
  • Build: Advancing technical foundations such as agent identity, verifiable credentials, and secure, interoperable architectures.
  • Govern: Addressing the policies and accountability mechanisms required as AI systems gain greater autonomy.

The Council’s first working group will focus on agentic commerce, investigating the oversight considerations that arise when AI agents act as proxies for consumers and businesses. This work builds on Sumsub’s existing AI-native tools, including the Summy AI Copilot and its Know Your Agent (KYA) framework. The inaugural meeting of the Council is scheduled for Q1 2027, with founding advisors to be announced in the interim.

"The opportunity presented by agentic AI is becoming clearer with every new use case, but the conditions for responsible adoption in environments with real financial, operational and regulatory consequences are still taking shape, even as they become increasingly business-critical,"

Jason Chan, APAC Government Relations Lead at Sumsub.

The companies involved

Sumsub is an AI-powered trust infrastructure provider that specializes in compliance operations, verification, and fraud prevention. The company provides a platform designed to secure the entire user journey, offering tools that automate KYC (Know Your Customer), KYB (Know Your Business), and transaction monitoring. By integrating AI into the core of its compliance stack, Sumsub has positioned itself as a critical layer for businesses operating in regulated markets that require high-speed, high-volume verification.

The firm has established a significant presence in the fintech news cycle, with 92 prior reports detailing its expansion into various global markets and its development of specialized security tools. Sumsub’s recent focus has shifted toward the emerging challenges of the AI era, specifically how to verify the identity and authority of non-human actors. The company operates globally, with a strong emphasis on navigating the complex regulatory landscapes of Europe, the Nordics, and the APAC region, where it works alongside government bodies to inform future standards for digital identity and automated governance.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively covered Sumsub’s efforts to modernize compliance and combat AI-driven threats. In September 2026, the publication reported that European Banks Failing to Stop Fraud at Instant Payment Speeds, Sumsub Report Finds, highlighting the technical strain on traditional banking infrastructure. To address internal security, the company also launched Sumsub Debuts Workforce Verification to Combat AI Fraud and Secure Enterprise Systems, targeting the rise of deepfakes in corporate environments.

Partnerships have also been a key theme, such as when DashDevs and Sumsub Partner to Embed Automated Compliance into Fintech Core Platform, providing a more seamless integration for emerging fintechs. Additionally, the firm has focused on regional infrastructure, as seen when Sumsub Unifies Nordic Verification with New All-in-One eID Bundle, simplifying non-documentary verification across Northern Europe.

What this means

The industry is entering a "delegation dilemma" where the speed of AI development is outpacing the legal definitions of agency and liability. This Council represents a necessary attempt by the private sector to self-regulate before fragmented regional policies—like those emerging in Singapore, China, and Hong Kong—create a compliance nightmare for global fintechs. The real pressure is now on verification providers to prove that "Know Your Agent" (KYA) can be as legally binding as KYC. If the industry fails to establish these identity standards, the adoption of agentic commerce will likely stall under the weight of unresolved fraud and unauthorized transaction disputes.
