Press Release: Hiscox Data Reveals 154% Surge in Small Business Accountant Searches Amid Jargon Confusion | Featured Image by FF News

Hiscox has identified a 154% surge in searches for small business accountants, highlighting a significant knowledge gap among UK entrepreneurs. For fintech providers and insurers, this underscores a critical demand for educational tools and simplified financial interfaces, as nearly half of prospective founders cite a lack of expertise as a primary barrier to entry.

What was announced

Hiscox released new analysis revealing that the barrier to entrepreneurship in the UK is increasingly linguistic and technical. While 52% of people express a desire to start their own business, 45% admit that a lack of business knowledge negatively impacts their confidence. This uncertainty is reflected in search behavior; beyond the 154% increase in searches for professional accounting support, there is a high volume of queries for basic financial terminology.

In the UK, "KPIs" (Key Performance Indicators) leads the ranking of business acronyms with 60,800 monthly Google searches. This is followed by "EBITDA" (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) at 33,200 searches and "VAT" (Value Added Tax) at 17,500. To address this, Hiscox has launched an interactive jargon quiz designed to help aspiring founders test their knowledge and identify specific gaps before launching a company. The data suggests that the need for such resources persists throughout the business lifecycle, as 69% of existing business owners still rely on search engines to decode unfamiliar terminology encountered during daily operations. The initiative aims to demystify the "language of business" that often acts as a gatekeeper for those entering the SME sector, providing a structured way for would-be founders to prepare for the financial realities of running a firm.

"Business terminology is part of everyday working life, but our research shows that many people are still having to look up what these terms actually mean."

The companies involved

Hiscox is a major international specialist insurer, listed on the London Stock Exchange and headquartered in Bermuda. The group provides a wide range of insurance products, with a significant focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), professional indemnity, and specialist risks such as cyber and kidnap and ransom. In the UK market, Hiscox is a prominent name in the commercial insurance space, often positioning itself as a partner for small businesses and consultants.

The company operates through several divisions, including Hiscox Retail, which handles smaller commercial and personal lines, and Hiscox London Market, which deals with larger, more complex risks. By focusing on the SME segment, the firm has built a reputation for providing not just coverage, but also resources aimed at business resilience and risk management. This latest focus on financial literacy aligns with its broader market position as an insurer that caters to the specific needs of independent professionals and growing companies who may lack the internal resources of larger corporations. Historically, the firm has leveraged its brand to offer more than just indemnity, focusing on the "human" side of business risk, which includes the confidence and knowledge of the business owner.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked Hiscox’s activities as it expands its footprint in the specialist insurance and technology sectors. In August 2025, we reported that Hiscox Agrees to Acquire US-Based Specialist Insurtech, a move that signaled the group’s intention to deepen its digital capabilities and reach within the American market. This acquisition followed a period of broader industry shifts in the insurtech space, where established players have increasingly sought to integrate advanced analytics and automated platforms. Other recent coverage in the sector includes reports on Verisk Launches Fraud Discovery Platform to Combat £1.16bn Insurance Fraud Crisis, Apollo Appoints David Burke to Lead Global Product Recall Expansion, and Feathery Unveils AI Portfolio Submission Analytics to Decode Insurance Win-Loss Patterns, highlighting the ongoing technological transformation across the insurance landscape.

What this means

The surge in searches for accountants and basic financial terms suggests that the "democratisation" of entrepreneurship is hitting a wall of technical complexity. For the fintech and insurtech sectors, this is a clear signal that product design must move beyond simple UI/UX improvements toward active financial education. If nearly half of potential business owners are deterred by jargon, then the market for embedded finance and automated accounting tools is still vastly underserved. The industry is under pressure to simplify the "back-office" experience, as the next generation of founders clearly values clarity and professional guidance over purely digital, self-service platforms that leave them searching Google for definitions. This creates a competitive opening for firms that can successfully blend automated services with educational support, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for the 52% of the population currently hesitant to launch.
