Altruist has integrated donor-advised funds into its wealth management and custody platform, removing traditional barriers like high minimums and fragmented portals. For fintech professionals, this move signals a shift toward consolidating philanthropic tools directly into the primary advisor workflow, potentially democratizing tax-efficient giving for a broader range of retail investors.

What was announced

Altruist has launched an integrated donor-advised fund (DAF) offering, designed to streamline the philanthropic process for financial advisors and their clients. The new functionality allows advisors to open, fund, and manage DAFs within the same interface used for other client accounts, eliminating the need for separate portals or fragmented logins. Existing funds can be transferred in two steps, while new contributions of cash or appreciated securities can be processed in a few clicks. Once assets are contributed, they belong to the sponsoring charity, allowing the donor to realize immediate tax benefits while recommending grants over time.

Unlike many traditional DAF platforms that limit investment options to a pre-set menu, Altruist allows these assets to be invested in any model available on its marketplace. This includes custom portfolios and personalized-indexing strategies. The platform has removed several common barriers to entry; there are no minimums for account opening, balances, or individual grants. Pricing starts at 50 basis points annually, which is notably lower than the 60 to 65 basis points typically charged by other DAF sponsors. Clients are also empowered to recommend grants to more than 1.8 million eligible charities directly through the Altruist website or mobile application, removing the requirement for advisor intervention in every transaction.

"Giving is one of the most personal things a client does with their advisor. We want to support advisors and their clients through that process by making donor advised funds easy to navigate and access,"

Jason Wenk, founder and CEO of Altruist.

The companies involved

Altruist operates as an AI-forward wealth technology and custody platform specifically built for independent financial advisors. The company provides a vertically integrated suite of tools that combines brokerage services with portfolio management software, aiming to reduce the administrative burden on Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs). By controlling the custody layer, the firm is able to automate many of the manual processes that traditionally slow down account opening and asset transfers.

In a significant market shift, Vanguard reached an agreement to acquire Altruist in August 2026. This acquisition was positioned as a major move to expand the reach of AI-driven wealth management and strengthen Vanguard's position in the RIA custody space. Before this acquisition, Altruist had already established itself as a disruptor in the fintech sector, focusing on digital-first experiences that challenge legacy custodians. The platform’s infrastructure is designed to support a wide range of investment vehicles, from standard equities to more complex alternative assets, all while leveraging artificial intelligence to automate wealth management workflows for its users.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked Altruist’s expansion into diverse asset classes and automated services. In September 2026, the company announced it would expand its alternatives marketplace with pre-IPO SPVs, providing advisors with access to private market opportunities. This followed the launch of Hazel, an AI-powered financial planning agent designed to automate complex wealth management workflows.

The firm’s growth has also been marked by significant institutional adoption, such as when Civic Financial consolidated $1 billion in assets onto the Altruist platform. Perhaps the most transformative development was the news that Vanguard would acquire Altruist, a move that signaled a major consolidation of AI-driven technology within the broader custody and brokerage industry.

What this means

The integration of donor-advised funds directly into a unified custody platform highlights a growing industry trend: the "commoditization of complexity." By removing minimums and lowering fees to 50 basis points, Altruist is placing direct pressure on legacy custodians and specialized DAF sponsors who have long relied on high entry barriers and siloed systems. This move suggests that philanthropic planning is no longer a niche service for the ultra-high-net-worth, but a standard component of the digital advisor toolkit. The primary challenge for the sector now is whether traditional players can modernize their legacy stacks fast enough to match this level of workflow integration.
