Segen Ltd and Zopa Bank have partnered to launch a residential financing solution under the Segen Finance brand, enabling UK homeowners to spread the cost of solar and storage installations. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant move into the green lending space, integrating point-of-sale finance directly into the renewable energy supply chain.

What was announced

The partnership introduces a dedicated financing stream for the UK’s residential solar and storage market, aiming to lower the financial barriers for domestic renewable energy adoption. Operating under the Segen Finance brand, the initiative positions Segen Ltd as a credit broker that introduces customers to Zopa Bank, which serves as the regulated lender. This expansion follows the 2025 launch of Segen’s finance offering for commercial and industrial (C&I) clients, marking a strategic move into the consumer sector.

The service is integrated directly into Segen’s existing Proposal Tool used by its network of approved installers. Once an installer generates a technical system quote, homeowners can access a dedicated link to Zopa’s platform to apply for credit. The application process provides a personalised quote in approximately two minutes without affecting the applicant's credit score, utilizing Zopa’s automated credit decisioning for near-instant results. Eligible customers can choose repayment terms ranging from 24 to 120 months at a representative APR of 9.9%.

For installers, the system removes the regulatory burden of becoming a credit provider while streamlining project cash flow. Upon finance approval, installers can schedule hardware delivery from Segen without using their own credit facilities or paying upfront. Once the installation is finished, the installer receives the full project payment, minus the cost of the hardware supplied by Segen. All components are supplied by Segen, ensuring homeowners receive equipment from audited brands.

"Consumers increasingly expect convenient digital financing options when making major purchases. Through our partnership with Segen, we are helping homeowners to access renewable energy technologies through a simple, transparent and fully regulated digital finance journey that helps spread the cost of home upgrades,"

Tim Russell, General Manager of Retail Finance & Payments at Zopa Bank.

The companies involved

Segen Ltd is established as the largest distributor of renewable energy technologies in the United Kingdom. Based in Hampshire, the company maintains an extensive network of approved residential installers and provides a comprehensive suite of hardware, including solar panels and energy storage systems. Segen’s role in the market involves the rigorous auditing and selection of components from global brands to ensure performance and reliability for end-users. By launching Segen Finance, the distributor has moved beyond hardware logistics into financial intermediation.

Zopa Bank, the lending partner in this arrangement, is a major player in the UK digital banking sector. Originally known for pioneering peer-to-peer lending before transitioning into a fully licensed bank, Zopa has focused on high-yield savings, credit cards, and personal loans. The bank has increasingly moved into the retail finance space, leveraging its proprietary technology stack to provide automated, real-time credit decisions. By partnering with a major distributor like Segen, Zopa positions itself at the intersection of fintech and the green energy transition, targeting a growing segment of the credit market driven by domestic decarbonisation efforts and government initiatives like the Warm Homes Plan.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed Zopa Bank’s rapid technological and corporate evolution closely. Recently, the bank launched Zopa Launches "Ask Zopa" AI: The UK's Most Advanced Conversational Banking Assistant, which introduced sophisticated conversational tools to its retail offering. This followed a strategic expansion of its leadership, as seen when Zopa Bank Bolsters Board with Former NatWest and Aldermore Executives to Drive Growth. The bank has also focused on operational efficiency and customer empathy, notably when Zopa Bank Partners with NotifyNOW to Simplify Bereavement Notifications Across 1,600 Providers. What this means

This partnership signals a maturing of the "green fintech" sector, moving beyond simple carbon tracking to the heavy lifting of asset financing. By embedding Zopa’s lending directly into Segen’s technical proposal tool, the companies are addressing the primary friction point in renewable adoption: the prohibitive upfront cost. Traditional high-street lenders are increasingly under pressure to match this level of point-of-sale integration. However, the success of such schemes depends on whether a 9.9% APR can compete with homeowners’ ability to further leverage existing mortgage debt at lower rates. This move highlights a broader industry shift toward treating home energy systems as a financed utility rather than a luxury capital expense.
