Zopa Bank has introduced "Ask Zopa," a conversational AI interface for its Biscuit account, enabling its two million customers to execute transactions and manage budgets through natural language. This launch marks a significant transition toward agentic banking in the UK, where artificial intelligence moves beyond basic customer service to handle active financial tasks like bill splitting and real-time payments.

What was announced

The "Ask Zopa" feature is built on the bank’s proprietary AI platform and agentic architecture. Unlike traditional banking apps that rely on static menus and navigation paths, this system is designed to understand, remember, and personalise the user experience through voice or text interactions. It is currently available to users of the bank's Biscuit account, providing a more intuitive way to handle daily financial administration.

The functionality allows customers to perform complex tasks by simply asking. For instance, users can snap a photo of a restaurant bill or an invoice, and the AI will automatically process the image to split the costs or settle the payment. Other capabilities include requesting payments from friends, viewing balances, managing savings pots, and updating personal details. On the planning side, the tool allows for granular budgeting commands, such as asking the bank to set a specific savings goal or to provide a warning if spending in a particular category, like takeaways, exceeds a set limit.

This rollout follows significant internal testing and investment in data enrichment. Zopa reports that its existing AI implementations already resolve 65% of customer service queries internally. Furthermore, customers who have interacted with the bank’s AI tools have reported satisfaction scores 10% higher than those who have not. The announcement arrives alongside strong financial performance, with the bank reporting its third consecutive year of profitability and a pre-tax profit of £65 million for the financial year ending 31 December 2025.

"Zopa is ushering in a new era of banking — one where managing your money is as simple as having a conversation. “Ask Zopa” redefines the role of a bank in our customers’ lives, from simplifying day to day tasks and money management to actively helping people plan, save and make smarter decisions in real time. Our ambition is to build a banking app that can anticipate needs, unlock opportunities and give customers complete control, confidence and clarity over their money every day."

The companies involved

Zopa Bank is a prominent British digital bank that has evolved significantly since its inception. Originally known as a pioneer in the peer-to-peer lending space, it successfully pivoted to a full banking model and now serves approximately two million customers. The firm has maintained a trajectory of growth and financial stability, reaching a milestone of three consecutive years of profitability in a competitive fintech landscape.

The bank’s leadership and governance have recently been strengthened by the appointment of several industry veterans to its Board. These include Bruce Fletcher, who previously served as the Chief Risk Officer for NatWest Group, and Dr Paula Walter, the former Chief Technology and Information Officer at Aldermore Group. Both joined as Independent Non-Executive Directors. This blend of traditional banking experience and fintech agility has positioned the company as a major challenger in the UK retail banking sector, particularly as it moves to integrate advanced "agentic" AI into its core product offering.

What this means

This announcement moves the needle for the UK banking sector by shifting AI from an "informational" tool to a "transactional" one. While many banks have deployed chatbots for FAQs, Zopa is among the first to give an AI agent the keys to the ledger, allowing it to move money based on verbal or visual prompts. This puts immediate pressure on legacy institutions and even first-generation neobanks whose apps still rely on manual data entry and multi-step navigation. The success of this model will likely hinge on consumer trust; asking an AI to "pay a bill" requires a higher level of confidence in the underlying technology than simply asking for a balance update. It raises a critical question for the industry: are customers ready for their bank to act as an autonomous agent rather than just a digital vault?
