Press Release: Prism Data Secures $20M Series A to Scale AI-Powered Cash Flow Underwriting | Featured Image by FF News

Prism Data has secured $20 million in Series A funding to scale its cash flow underwriting technology, which uses bank transaction data to assess creditworthiness. For fintech professionals, this capital injection signals the growing institutional shift away from traditional credit scores toward real-time financial behavior analysis, particularly for gig workers and those with non-traditional income streams.

What was announced

Prism Data has raised $20 million in a Series A funding round led by Story Ventures. The round saw participation from FINTOP, Core VC, Obvious Ventures, 1st & Main Growth Partners, and Mana Ventures. This latest injection of capital brings the company’s total funding to more than $25 million, following a $5 million seed round announced in 2023. The investment follows a period of significant scaling for the startup, which reports that its monthly API volume has grown more than 100x over the last two years, representing an average compounded growth rate of more than 20% per month.

The funding coincides with the launch of REFRACT™, a new AI-powered transaction categorization engine. REFRACT, which stands for Real-time Engine For Recognizing, Analyzing, and Categorizing Transactions, is built upon a proprietary dataset of more than 30 billion bank transactions. This engine is intended to serve as the technological foundation for Prism’s forthcoming generation of credit scores and analytics. The company is currently working with several of the largest traditional banks in the United States to deploy these cash flow underwriting tools, aiming to reach millions of additional consumers and small businesses who may be underserved by traditional credit reporting methods.

The companies involved

Prism Data is a U.S.-based cash flow analytics startup that has developed a platform for "cash flow underwriting." This method uses consumer bank account transaction data to provide a more granular view of creditworthiness than traditional credit scores. The company’s infrastructure is designed to serve both modern fintechs and traditional financial institutions, currently counting three of the five largest U.S. fintech lenders and six of the ten largest digital banks as clients.

The company’s market position is strengthened by its distribution network, which includes major credit and data infrastructure providers such as Equifax, Plaid, and LexisNexis. These partnerships allow Prism’s analytics to be integrated into existing financial workflows at scale. The investment round features a cross-section of venture capital firms focused on data infrastructure and financial technology. FINTOP, for instance, is a specialist in B2B financial technology, while Obvious Ventures and Core VC bring experience in backing infrastructure that bridges the gap between raw banking data and actionable credit insights. These investors are backing a shift in the credit market where real-time liquidity and spending patterns are becoming as influential as historical payment records in determining risk.

What this means

This funding highlights a critical pivot point for the credit industry. As traditional credit reports increasingly fail to capture the nuances of the gig economy and non-wage income, the pressure is on legacy bureaus to integrate more granular, real-time data. Prism’s rapid growth and its integration with giants like Equifax suggest that cash flow underwriting is no longer a niche fintech experiment but is becoming a standard requirement for modern lending. The launch of AI-driven categorization tools like REFRACT raises the bar for data accuracy, potentially leaving lenders who rely solely on static, month-old credit scores at a significant competitive disadvantage in risk pricing.
