Backbase Launches Conversational Banking: Agentic AI with a Governance Audit Trail
By Lauren Towner · 8 October 2026

Backbase has launched its Conversational Banking solution, moving agentic AI into general availability for financial institutions. By shifting from simple digital access to governed execution, the platform allows customers and employees to perform complex banking tasks through natural language, potentially reducing operating costs by up to 20% while maintaining strict institutional control.
What was announced
The launch of Conversational Banking marks a transition for Backbase from providing digital interfaces to enabling "agentic" execution. The system allows users to express needs in natural language—such as requesting to block and replace a lost card, checking a payment, or tracking the progress of a service request—which AI agents then translate into specific banking actions. These actions are governed by the bank’s existing policies, permissions, and approval workflows defined within the platform.
For bank employees, the tool acts as a searchable internal knowledge base, providing summaries of work already completed by AI agents when a human needs to step in for complex investigations or requests requiring human judgment. The solution is built on the AI-native Backbase Banking OS and is designed to work alongside existing digital stacks, meaning banks do not need to replace their current mobile or online platforms to implement it. It serves as an entry point to a broader portfolio that includes Relationship Intelligence and Customer Operations.
The technology is already in production at more than 10 financial institutions. One of the four largest banks in South Africa has utilized the system to support 22 million customer interactions, reportedly increasing its self-service containment rate from 20% to 70%. According to McKinsey & Company data cited by Backbase, this level of automation could reduce bank operating costs by 15% to 20% by automating routine information gathering and freeing staff for advisory roles and complex exceptions.
"Digital banking put the bank in the customer’s pocket. The next step is to let customers say what they need done and have the bank’s agents act on it intelligently. That future has now arrived early: one where agents do the work, and banks stay in control"
Jouk Pleiter, Founder and CEO of Backbase.
The companies involved
Backbase is a prominent player in the engagement banking category, headquartered in Amsterdam. The company provides a specialized Banking Engagement Platform—often referred to as a Banking OS—that sits on top of core banking systems to unify the customer experience across various touchpoints. Unlike traditional core providers that focus on the ledger, Backbase focuses on the "engagement" layer, aiming to replace siloed point solutions with a single, integrated platform for retail, business, and corporate banking.
The company has established a significant global footprint, working with major institutions such as Meriwest Credit Union and VeraBank. Gene Fichtenholz, Vice President, Chief Technology Officer at Meriwest Credit Union, and Michael Purifoy, Senior EVP - Chief Treasury and Digital Banking Officer at VeraBank, have both highlighted the platform's ability to drive automation and consolidate internal "sources of truth." With over 70 mentions in FF News coverage, Backbase remains one of the most active fintech providers in the digital transformation space, recently expanding its focus toward "Agentic Banking" to coordinate fulfillment across teams and systems.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed Backbase’s strategic pivot toward agentic AI over the last year. In September 2026, we reported that Backbase Appoints Tikkie Founder Roland Booijen to Lead Agentic Banking Push, a move that signaled the company’s commitment to integrating autonomous agents into its core offering. This followed a major industry collaboration where Mastercard and Backbase Launch Agentic Banking Solutions for 120+ Global Banks, providing a massive distribution channel for these AI-driven tools. Earlier, the company sought to balance automation with human interaction, as seen when Backbase Partners With Unblu to Close the Gap Between Digital Convenience and Human Trust. The firm’s technical capabilities were also recognized when Backbase wins Datos Impact Award for Excellence in Commercial Banking in late 2025.
What this means
The shift from simple "chatbots" to "agentic AI" represents a significant escalation in the fintech arms race. For years, conversational interfaces in banking were limited to answering FAQs; the industry is now moving toward a model where AI has the authority to execute transactions and modify account states. This puts traditional core banking providers under pressure to open up their APIs further, as the value in the stack migrates from the system of record to the system of execution. The primary challenge for the sector remains the "hallucination" risk inherent in Large Language Models, but by embedding governance directly into the Banking OS, the market is attempting to solve the trust gap that has previously stalled AI adoption in highly regulated environments.
