U.S. Bank Launches Protect 360 to Combat Identity Theft and Privacy Risks
By Lauren Towner · 7 October 2026

U.S. Bank has launched Protect 360, an integrated identity and credit protection suite designed to move beyond reactive fraud alerts. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant shift in retail banking strategy, embedding high-value security services directly into the core mobile experience to increase customer retention and compete with standalone identity protection providers.
What was announced
Protect 360 is a new service available through the U.S. Bank Mobile App and online banking, designed to simplify how clients monitor credit activity and manage privacy risks. The service replaces the bank’s previous credit monitoring experience, expanding the scope of protection to include identity and data security features. It is offered in two distinct tiers to accommodate different levels of consumer need.
The first tier, Protect 360 Essentials, is available to eligible clients at no additional cost. It provides tools to monitor changes to credit profiles and alerts users when their personal information appears on data broker sites. It also identifies potential exposure of sensitive data and provides guidance on how to remove that information from exposed sites. The second tier, Protect 360 Premium, is available for a monthly fee of $9.99 plus applicable sales tax for clients with a U.S. Bank checking or savings account. This subscription automates the removal of information from data broker sites and includes up to $1 million in identity theft coverage.
The service is designed to add value to the bank’s core everyday products, specifically the U.S. Bank Smartly Checking, U.S. Bank Smartly Savings, and the U.S. Bank Smartly Visa Signature card. By integrating these features into the existing banking app, the institution aims to provide a more proactive defense against the increasing frequency of digital fraud and personal information exposure.
"Fraud, scams and the exposure of personal information have become an everyday reality for consumers, making basic monitoring tools almost a baseline expectation. But consumers want more than alerts after the fact, they want help understanding where they're vulnerable and what steps they can take to better protect themselves,"
Arijit Roy, Senior Executive Vice President - Head of Consumer and Business Banking Products at U.S. Bank.
The companies involved
U.S. Bank is a major financial services provider in the United States, offering a wide range of consumer and business banking products. The institution has recently focused on digitizing its retail offering, as evidenced by the integration of Protect 360 into its existing mobile and online banking platforms. The bank maintains a significant presence in the consumer market through its Smartly branded ecosystem, which includes checking, savings, and credit card products. By embedding identity protection into these core accounts, the bank is positioning itself as a central hub for a client's digital and financial life. The company operates with a focus on technological integration, moving away from siloed financial products toward a more holistic service model that addresses the increasing prevalence of digital risks faced by modern consumers.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed the bank's recent expansion of its digital and payment capabilities. In September 2026, the bank made headlines with the launch of the U.S. Bank Debuts USBDC Stablecoin for Instant Cross-Border Payments via Stellar, aimed at facilitating instant cross-border payments. This followed a strategic leadership change where the bank U.S. Bank Appoints Calvert Lange to Lead Institutional Payments and Merchant Sales. On the consumer side, the bank recently U.S. Bank Taps Jessica Alba for New Small Business Credit Card Launch. Additionally, internal research from the firm highlighted a shift in corporate sentiment, with a U.S. Bank Report: CFO Optimism Surges as Revenue Growth and M&A Become Top Strategic Priorities indicating surging optimism regarding revenue growth and dealmaking.
What this means
This move signals that "identity as a service" is becoming a standard feature of premium banking rather than an optional add-on. By offering a free tier, U.S. Bank is commoditizing basic credit monitoring, putting significant pressure on standalone identity protection providers. The real value for the bank lies in the Premium subscription, which creates a recurring revenue stream while simultaneously reducing the operational costs associated with fraud. This strategy raises questions for the wider sector about whether other Tier 1 banks will continue to rely on third-party security partnerships or follow this path of building proprietary, deeply integrated protection suites to own the customer relationship more fully.
