Ant International Achieves Real-Time Cross-Bank Liquidity via HKMA EnsembleTX Tokenisation
By Lauren Towner · 3 November 2026

Ant International has successfully executed live interbank transactions using tokenised deposits in Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s EnsembleTX initiative. For fintech professionals, this move signals the transition of blockchain-based wholesale settlement from experimental sandboxes to real-time, commercial liquidity management for major financial institutions.
What was announced
Ant International completed a series of live Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) interbank transactions between September and October 2026. These operations were conducted in close collaboration with HSBC, Bank of China (Hong Kong), and China Construction Bank (Asia). The transactions utilized tokenised deposits settled through the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) Central Bank Money (CeBM) infrastructure, representing a major step toward the commercialisation of tokenised assets.
The technical backbone of these transfers is WhaleRTP, Ant International’s proprietary blockchain-based wholesale settlement platform. By moving from payment instruction to final receipt within five minutes, the system enables near-instantaneous movement of funds. This infrastructure allows for automated transaction execution and 24/7 liquidity access, which significantly reduces the need for pre-funding requirements and lowers the working capital typically required for cross-bank liquidity movements in the region.
Having participated in the Ensemble Sandbox since 2024 and joined the Project Ensemble Architecture Community in 2025, Ant International is now positioning this technology as a precursor to "agentic treasury." This involves integrating AI-enabled foreign exchange and treasury solutions, specifically pairing real-time intelligence from FalconTST with the WhaleRTP settlement layer to allow AI agents to execute automated financial flows. This full-stack, AI-native product suite aims to close the loop between decision-making and execution in corporate treasury.
"EnsembleTX has laid the groundwork for agentic treasury. By pairing real-time intelligence from FalconTST with WhaleRTP’s proven settlement layer, AI agents can now make and execute decisions in continuous, automated flows. Together, they close the loop: the agent decides, and WhaleRTP executes. Supported by the HKMA’s clear guidance, this is the future of corporate treasury in Hong Kong and beyond."

The companies involved
Ant International is a major global entity under the umbrella of Ant Group, the Chinese fintech giant that originated from the development of Alipay. The company focuses on providing digital payment and financial services to global merchants and consumers, leveraging its deep expertise in mobile payments and blockchain technology. In the context of the Hong Kong market, Ant International has established itself as a key player in the development of next-generation financial infrastructure, particularly through its proprietary blockchain and AI-native product suites.
HSBC, one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisations, serves as a critical partner in this initiative. Headquartered in London but with deep historical and strategic roots in Hong Kong, HSBC is a primary clearing bank in the region. Its participation in EnsembleTX alongside Bank of China (Hong Kong) and China Construction Bank (Asia) highlights the collaborative effort between traditional banking giants and tech-driven fintech firms to modernise interbank settlement. These institutions are increasingly looking toward tokenisation to solve long-standing inefficiencies in liquidity management and cross-border settlement.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has tracked the rapid expansion of Ant International’s global footprint and its focus on digital transformation across multiple jurisdictions. Recently, the company secured major payment and SVF licenses from the Central Bank of the UAE, expanding its reach into the Middle East. We also covered how Tourism Malaysia and Alipay+ partnered to digitise cross-border travel for the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
Meanwhile, HSBC continues to dominate regional headlines, including its INR 200 crore commitment to financial literacy in India. The broader industry shift toward tokenisation was also highlighted in our report on Episode Six’s real-time verification for bank-issued tokenised deposits, which mirrors the technical advancements seen in Project Ensemble.
What this means
This announcement moves the needle by proving that tokenised deposits are no longer a theoretical exercise for central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilots. By achieving sub-five-minute settlement, the pressure is now on traditional clearing systems to justify their slower, manual processes. The shift toward "agentic treasury" suggests a future where human intervention in liquidity management becomes the exception rather than the rule. However, this raises significant questions regarding the regulatory oversight of AI-driven financial decisions. While the efficiency gains are clear, the industry must now grapple with the systemic risks of automated, high-velocity capital movements across interbank networks, which could lead to increased market volatility if not properly governed.
