Every Finance Team Has One Person Who Understands the Close
By Ali Paterson · 15 September 2026

There is someone in almost every accounting department who has been there twenty or twenty-five years and holds the whole picture — the data warehouses, the side workbooks, the accounting workarounds nobody documented. Leadership gets nervous when that person takes a long holiday. New joiners find the legacy structures so tangled that navigating them needs an IT background more than an accounting one.
In this segment, Adrian Mustafa, Product Director at SAP Fioneer, makes the case that standardising and making content traceable is what finally opens that door — to younger colleagues, and increasingly to AI. He describes something he sees on every implementation: teams who had never really spoken to each other collaborating, because translating decades of Excel logic into a standard format forces the knowledge transfer that never otherwise happens. Mike Dolan, Partner at Ernst & Young, adds the risk angle, on what it means to make one accounting policy change across a dozen source systems versus making it once.
Mustafa is then unusually direct about AI readiness, including what SAP Fioneer had to retire from its own product to get there. His conclusion — that AI readiness comes down to two things, and that the second is the one nearly everyone misses — is worth hearing before anyone signs off an AI budget.
