Wirex has appointed Lord Ranger of Northwood as Board Adviser to its UK digital asset arm, Wirex Labs, as the company prepares for the Financial Conduct Authority’s upcoming digital asset regime. For fintech leaders, this move signals a strategic pivot toward regulatory alignment and political engagement ahead of the UK's 2027 oversight deadline.

What was announced

Lord Ranger will advise Wirex Labs on its UK digital asset strategy. Wirex Labs is the specific entity handling the firm's UK business under the new regime, which the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is set to oversee starting in October 2027. Lord Ranger brings a background in both technology and public policy, currently serving on the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee and co-chairing the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Digital Markets and Digital Money. He is also the vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence.

His previous experience includes serving as the Mayor of London’s Director for Digital London, where he established the city’s first Digital Office, and holding a Senior Vice President role at Atos for Northern Europe, APAC, and India. He also spent six years on the board of techUK. Beyond his advisory role, Lord Ranger is scheduled to deliver a keynote at Full Stack London, Wirex’s stablecoin infrastructure conference, on 12 November. He will participate in a fireside chat with Chetan Shah, Executive Director of Wirex Labs, discussing whether the UK can achieve digital asset leadership through regulation. This appointment is part of a broader expansion of the Wirex leadership team as the company scales its UK operations.

"Digital assets are becoming part of mainstream finance in the UK, and how firms approach regulation will decide how far people trust the sector. Wirex is building its UK digital assets business with that trust at its core. I’m delighted to join as Board Adviser and to support the team as it grows in the UK."

The companies involved

Wirex is a global provider of stablecoin infrastructure, positioning itself as a bridge between traditional finance and the digital asset economy. The company has evolved from its early roots to offer a suite of services including stablecoin-native banking and enterprise card issuance. Wirex Labs serves as the group’s dedicated UK digital asset arm, specifically tasked with navigating the domestic regulatory landscape. While Wirex operates on a global scale, Wirex Labs is the vehicle through which the firm intends to establish the UK as a core market under the Financial Conduct Authority’s finalised digital asset rules. The group has recently focused on building out its "Full Stack" infrastructure, aiming to provide the underlying technology for payments and banking-as-a-service providers. This corporate structure allows the parent company to maintain global operations while ensuring that its UK-specific business, led by Executive Director Chetan Shah, remains compliant with the evolving local framework overseen by the FCA.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed Wirex’s recent expansion into the stablecoin and wealth management sectors. In September 2026, the company launched Wirex One: A Stablecoin-Native Neobank for Mass Affluent Wealth Management, targeting high-net-worth individuals with digital asset services. This followed a strategic move to Partner to Accelerate Enterprise Stablecoin Card Issuance with Tempo. More recently, the firm announced its intention to Host New Stablecoin Infrastructure Conference, Full Stack London, which serves as the platform for Lord Ranger’s upcoming keynote. These developments highlight a period of high activity for the firm as it transitions from a retail-focused app to a broader infrastructure provider.

What this means

The appointment of a sitting peer with deep ties to digital policy suggests that the era of "move fast and break things" in UK crypto is definitively over. By bringing Lord Ranger into the fold, Wirex is acknowledging that success in the UK market now depends as much on political capital and regulatory fluency as it does on technical innovation. The 2027 FCA deadline is creating a "compliance moat"; firms that cannot navigate the new regime will likely be squeezed out. This move puts pressure on other mid-tier digital asset firms to professionalise their boards and engage directly with Westminster to ensure their survival in a tightening regulatory environment.
