Akash is migrating its decentralized compute ecosystem to the Solana blockchain, a move intended to scale the infrastructure required for the AI inference era. By shifting its underlying architecture over the next 24 months, Akash aims to leverage Solana’s low transaction costs and liquidity to turn compute power into a liquid, globally accessible resource for developers.

What was announced

The migration follows the approval of Governance Proposal 346, which saw 97% of Akash token holders vote in favor of the transition. Over a two-year period, Akash will move its entire infrastructure to the Solana network, integrating its core products directly into the ecosystem. This includes the Akash Marketplace, which aggregates distributed compute supply via a globally accessible marketplace; AkashML, a high-performance platform for AI inference; and Akash Homenode, a tool allowing individual users to contribute compute power to the network.

The decision to move was based on an extensive review that identified Solana as the most suitable environment for Akash’s growth, citing its established Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) ecosystem and its capacity to handle high-frequency transactions at low cost. For existing stakeholders, the transition includes a 1:1 migration path for AKT tokens to the SPL AKT standard via a dedicated portal. Technical planning and coordination between the two teams have already commenced.

The move is designed to expand Akash's reach to Solana’s user base, which currently exceeds 50 million active users. By making compute resources native to Solana, Akash intends to facilitate deeper integration with existing on-chain tools for payments, AI agents, and crypto applications, positioning its compute layer as a foundational component for future AI development within the network.

"AI compute is becoming an increasingly critical resource as demand for inference continues to grow. From the beginning, Akash has been driven by the belief that compute power should be accessible to everyone. Choosing Solana marks an important milestone in that mission and our broader vision of making compute a liquid resource. Its infrastructure, liquidity, and thriving developer ecosystem give us the foundation to scale our marketplace, reach new audiences, and build entirely new markets around compute. We are incredibly proud of what our community has built and excited to make Solana our home as we build the next generation of AI infrastructure together."

The companies involved

Akash operates as an open compute platform specifically designed for the AI and inference era. It functions as a decentralized marketplace where users can buy and sell surplus computing power, providing an alternative to centralized cloud providers. By distributing the supply of compute, the platform aims to lower costs and increase accessibility for developers building AI models and decentralized applications.

Solana is a high-performance blockchain network known for its speed and scalability, making it a primary hub for decentralized finance (DeFi) and DePIN projects. Managed in part by the Solana Foundation, the ecosystem has attracted significant institutional interest and a large developer community. It has become a preferred destination for projects requiring high throughput and low latency. The network's architecture is designed to support internet-scale applications, ranging from global payments systems to complex AI-driven agents. With over 50 million active users, Solana maintains a dominant position in the market for decentralized infrastructure, providing the liquidity and technical framework necessary for large-scale migrations like that of the Akash Network.

What FF News has reported before

Solana has seen a surge in institutional and infrastructure adoption recently, as evidenced by several high-profile integrations. FF News recently reported that J.P. Morgan Expands Tokenized Money Market Funds to Solana Blockchain, signaling a major shift in how traditional finance interacts with the network. This was followed by news that PrimeRevenue Tokenizes Trade Finance Assets on Solana to Unlock Global Liquidity. Additionally, the network's utility in the payments space was bolstered when Polygon Expands Regulated Payments Stack to Solana; Kira Signs as First Customer. Further expanding its global reach, Universal Launches UAE-Regulated USDU Stablecoin on Solana with Aquanow Distribution, highlighting the network's growing role in regulated financial products.

What this means

This migration highlights a growing trend of DePIN projects gravitating toward Solana to solve the scalability issues that often hinder decentralized networks. By moving a compute-heavy ecosystem like Akash, the industry is seeing a consolidation of infrastructure around networks that can prove their ability to handle high-volume, low-latency workloads. This puts significant pressure on other Layer 1 blockchains to prove they can offer similar liquidity and developer tools for the burgeoning AI sector. The move raises questions about the long-term viability of multi-chain strategies for infrastructure projects, as the benefits of a single, highly liquid ecosystem like Solana become increasingly difficult for developers to ignore.
