Sohar International Launches All-in-One Expat Banking Proposition in Oman
By Lauren Towner · 20 October 2026

Sohar International has launched an integrated Expat Proposition in Oman, bundling housing finance, insurance, and digital remittances into a single ecosystem. For fintech professionals, this represents a strategic move to capture the high-value expatriate market by reducing friction between cross-border payments and local asset acquisition, aligning with Oman’s broader digital transformation and urban development goals.
What was announced
The Expat Proposition targets the diverse financial needs of Oman's international community through four primary pillars: housing, spending, protection, and remittances. A central component is the Expat Housing Loan, which allows residents to finance ready-to-move-in properties within approved Integrated Tourism Complexes (ITCs). Eligible customers must be at least 21 years old with a minimum monthly salary of OMR 1,500. The bank offers financing up to 70% of the property value with repayment tenors reaching 20 years, capped at age 60 at maturity. Financing is also subject to a maximum debt burden ratio of 50%.
For daily transactions, the bank introduced a 3% Cashback Credit Card covering dining, fuel, groceries, and school fees, with rewards credited automatically each month. The card includes six complimentary airport lounge visits and 0% interest payment plans for up to 24 months. Wealth Management clients using Visa Signature cards receive expanded benefits, including unlimited lounge access and luxury travel services like home check-in with luggage collection, fast-track immigration, and chauffeur transfers.
The insurance component, delivered through partnerships with Liva Insurance and Arabia Falcon Insurance, provides medical, motor, and life coverage. Medical plans offer discounts on coverage up to OMR 10,000, while life insurance includes two months of zero premium costs. Finally, the digital remittance service enables instant, paperless transfers to over 35 countries via mobile banking, rewarding local transfers with loyalty points.
"Our approach is to look beyond individual financial products and understand the broader needs that shape our customers’ financial lives. For expatriate customers, this includes managing everyday expenses, assuring themselves and their families, and maintaining seamless financial connections with their home countries. By bringing these needs together through an integrated proposition, supported by our digital capabilities and strategic collaborations, we are creating a more connected banking experience while enabling our customers to derive greater value from their relationship with Sohar International."

What this means
This announcement highlights a growing trend in the GCC where banks are shifting from being simple utility providers to lifestyle orchestrators for the expatriate demographic. By bundling high-friction services like mortgages for non-nationals with high-frequency services like remittances, Sohar International is attempting to lock in a mobile workforce that has traditionally been fragmented across multiple service providers. This puts pressure on standalone remittance houses and smaller insurers who may struggle to compete with the convenience of an integrated bank-led ecosystem. The success of this model will likely depend on the seamlessness of the digital execution and the competitiveness of the FX rates offered within the app compared to specialized fintech rivals.
