Press Release: Rocket Money Launches Rowan: The AI Agent That Negotiates Bills and Cancels Subscriptions via Text | Featured Image by FF News

Rocket Money has launched Rowan, an AI agent designed to move personal finance from passive observation to active execution. For fintech professionals, this marks a significant shift toward "agentic" finance, where AI doesn't just categorize spending but actively negotiates bills and cancels subscriptions on behalf of the user via simple text messaging.

What was announced

The new AI agent, named Rowan, is powered by Anthropic and is designed to monitor consumer finances around the clock. Unlike traditional personal finance tools that provide a static dashboard of past spending, Rowan is built to identify savings opportunities and execute tasks in the real world based on plain-language instructions from the user.

The system operates through a text-based interface. For example, if a user signs up for a free trial of a streaming service, Rowan monitors the account and sends a text three weeks later asking if the user wishes to keep the service. A simple reply of "cancel" triggers the AI to contact the service provider and finalize the cancellation without the user needing to log in or wait on hold. Beyond cancellations, Rowan can renegotiate recurring bills and set up automated savings rules, such as rounding up coffee purchases to the nearest dollar and transferring the difference into a high-yield savings account.

Technically, Rowan utilizes a stack of AI agents trained on Rocket Money data, employing a mix of adaptable agents for flexible reasoning and strict code for financial certainty. The system is designed to learn from "edge cases" - if it encounters a unique cancellation flow, it diagnoses the solution and applies that knowledge across the entire platform. Rowan is currently available to select subscribers as part of a new Premium Plus tier, with a wider rollout scheduled for later this year.

"What we've built with Rowan wasn't possible even 12 months ago. It finds the money slipping through the cracks, the forgotten subscriptions, the bills that creep up, and it actually does something about them. That's the difference between knowing and acting."

The companies involved

Rocket Money is a personal finance platform that provides tools for managing subscriptions, tracking spending, and monitoring credit scores. The company was formerly known as Truebill before it was acquired and rebranded to align with its parent organization. It is a subsidiary of Rocket Companies (NYSE: RKT), a Detroit-based fintech giant that also owns Rocket Mortgage, one of the largest retail mortgage lenders in the United States.

The AI infrastructure for Rowan is provided by Anthropic, an AI safety and research company based in San Francisco. Anthropic has become a major player in the generative AI space, competing with firms like OpenAI by focusing on steerable and reliable AI systems. By integrating Anthropic’s models with its own proprietary financial data, Rocket Money aims to provide a higher level of reasoning in its automated financial tasks. The development of Rowan was led by a specialized team including Chase Adams, VP of AI Engineering at Rocket Money, and Aaron Dignan, VP of Agentic Products at Rocket Money, who oversee the balance between automated AI reasoning and human verification.

What FF News has reported before

The move toward agentic AI is a growing trend across the financial services landscape. FF News recently covered how Multiplier Secures $6M Seed Round to Build AI Agent Infrastructure for Asset Managers, highlighting the demand for autonomous tools in institutional finance. Similarly, in the European market, Scalable Capital Launches Agentic Investing: Europe’s First AI-Open Banking Platform, which mirrors the shift from information to action. Other developments in the space include Daloopa Integrates Verified Financial Data into Google Cloud’s Gemini for AI-Driven Investment Research and efforts to manage the underlying costs of these technologies, such as when Ramp Launches Router.com to Slash Corporate AI Inference Costs by 40%.

What this means

The launch of Rowan signals the end of the "dashboard era" in personal finance. For years, PFM (Personal Financial Management) apps have struggled with low engagement because they required users to do the heavy lifting of analyzing data and making changes. By introducing an agent that can actually execute cancellations and negotiations, Rocket Money is putting pressure on traditional banking apps that remain stuck in a "read-only" state. This move raises the stakes for the entire sector: if an AI can handle the friction of the "cancel" button or the "negotiate" phone call, the consumer’s primary financial relationship may shift away from the bank and toward the agent that manages the money.
