Sumsub has integrated IPinfo’s geolocation and VPN detection data into its trust infrastructure to enhance KYC and fraud prevention. For fintech firms, this move highlights a shift toward using verifiable, evidence-based IP intelligence to satisfy regulatory audits and improve decision-making accuracy during onboarding and continuous monitoring.

What was announced

Sumsub is embedding IPinfo's data directly into its platform to serve a client base of over 4,000 companies across financial services, crypto, trading, and iGaming. The integration focuses on providing IP intelligence that is measurable and explainable, moving beyond basic background signals to become a core part of the infrastructure used for critical compliance decisions. The data provided includes geolocation, location precision, anonymization, hosting infrastructure, and details on the network behind an IP address. This context allows Sumsub’s users to defend their fraud and KYC decisions to auditors and regulators.

In performance testing against Sumsub’s known traffic, IPinfo demonstrated high-level precision. The provider correctly identified the country for 98.77% of tested IP addresses. Furthermore, half of all results were placed within 20 km of the corresponding GPS position, while fewer than 6% were more than 500 km away. This level of accuracy is intended to reduce large location errors that can lead to false positives or missed fraud in compliance workflows. By providing the evidence behind these classifications, the platform enables firms to substantiate why individual IP addresses were flagged as risky or cleared for onboarding. This transparency is specifically designed for customers who must justify their risk assessments during regulatory scrutiny.

"Our customers rely on the signals we provide to make decisions they may ultimately have to defend to their auditors. So we have to be able to substantiate every signal we pass on. That is the standard we hold our data providers to. That data informs decisions long after onboarding, so it has to hold up every time. Accuracy is easy to claim and hard to prove."

The companies involved

Sumsub is a trust infrastructure platform that provides a full-cycle verification suite for businesses. It serves a diverse global market, including traditional financial institutions and high-growth sectors like cryptocurrency and iGaming. The company’s platform is designed to orchestrate verification processes, including KYC, KYB, and transaction monitoring, while ensuring compliance with evolving international regulations. Sumsub has established a significant presence in the market, currently supporting more than 4,000 clients and maintaining a high volume of prior industry reporting.

IPinfo operates as a primary source of IP geolocation and intelligence data. Led by Founder & Co-CEO Ben Dowling, the company focuses on the technical measurement of the internet to provide data on how IP addresses are utilized, including identifying VPNs, proxies, and hosting providers. Unlike many data providers that offer black-box signals, IPinfo emphasizes the ability to investigate and substantiate individual results when they are challenged by users or regulators. This focus on data transparency and accuracy has positioned the company as a critical infrastructure partner for verification platforms that must maintain high reputations for reliability and regulatory compliance.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed Sumsub’s expansion into various facets of the verification and compliance market. Recently, the company addressed the rise of automated threats by launching the Sumsub Agentic AI Council to Drive Responsible AI Adoption in APAC. This initiative follows the debut of their Sumsub Debuts Workforce Verification to Combat AI Fraud and Secure Enterprise Systems tool, designed to secure enterprise systems against AI-driven fraud. In terms of market analysis, a European Banks Failing to Stop Fraud at Instant Payment Speeds, Sumsub Report Finds highlighted the pressure on traditional institutions. Sumsub has also focused on deep integrations, such as when DashDevs and Sumsub Partner to Embed Automated Compliance into Fintech Core Platform.

What this means

This partnership signals a maturing of the fraud prevention sector, where "accuracy" is no longer a sufficient metric on its own. As regulators increase their scrutiny of automated compliance decisions, the industry is moving toward a "show your work" model. Verification platforms that rely on opaque, third-party data sources are under increasing pressure; if a signal cannot be defended during an audit, it becomes a liability rather than an asset. This shift forces a consolidation of the data market around providers who can offer granular evidence and transparency. The central question for the sector is whether legacy IP databases can adapt to this demand for explainability or if they will be displaced by infrastructure-first providers.
