Zumo and Quantum Chain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to integrate quantum-resilient infrastructure into digital asset services. For fintech professionals, this addresses the "Q-Day" threat where quantum computers could break current encryption, potentially compromising blockchain security, asset ownership, and institutional custody within the next decade as banks ramp up adoption.

What was announced

Zumo and Quantum Chain have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate quantum-resilient blockchain infrastructure into Zumo’s digital asset platform. The collaboration is designed to protect the UK’s digital assets sector against Cryptographically Relevant Quantum Computers (CRQCs). These machines are expected to eventually possess the power to break the public-key cryptography that currently secures blockchain networks, asset ownership records, and institutional custody solutions.

The partnership arrives amid specific warnings from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which has advised financial institutions to complete their migration to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) by 2035. However, research from Google suggests that the timeline for CRQCs to become a reality could be as early as 2029, significantly narrowing the window for institutional response. A primary concern cited by the companies is the "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" (HNDL) attack, where encrypted data is stolen today to be decrypted once quantum technology matures.

Under the terms of the MoU, the two firms will combine Zumo’s compliant infrastructure with Quantum Chain’s resilient blockchain technology. The strategic integration is intended to support digital currency and asset management for central banks and regulated financial institutions. Furthermore, the companies have stated they will explore the development of a quantum-resistant GBP stablecoin as part of a broader effort to build a future-proofed digital asset ecosystem.

"In my view, Q-Day isn’t a specific day when a CRQC is created but rather a range of time when they become commercialised, weaponised, and publicised."

The companies involved

Zumo is a crypto-as-a-service platform that provides the infrastructure necessary for financial institutions to offer digital asset services. Based in the UK, the company focuses on providing compliant solutions for banks and wealth managers looking to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape of the cryptocurrency market. Zumo has established itself as a key player in the UK fintech ecosystem, frequently addressing the intersection of traditional finance and decentralized technology through its infrastructure and compliance tools.

Quantum Chain is a quantum-resilient blockchain and infrastructure platform. The company positions itself as a provider of post-quantum blockchain architecture, designed to protect against the specific cryptographic vulnerabilities introduced by quantum computing. Unlike standard post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migrations that layer security onto existing systems, Quantum Chain offers a foundational infrastructure shift. This approach is intended to allow institutions to focus on application development and product expansion without the recurring burden of updating underlying legacy architectures to meet emerging quantum threats.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Zumo’s efforts to bridge the gap between regulated finance and digital assets. We previously reported on how SaaScada and Zumo Launch Ready-Built Crypto Route for UK Banks and Wealth Managers, a partnership designed to simplify market entry for traditional firms. The company has also been active in regulatory compliance, as seen when Zumo Launches UK Cryptoasset Regulation Tracker to Simplify FCA Compliance for Fintechs.

Additionally, we covered how Zumo and Zeyro Launch Compliance Bridge for UK Crypto Market Entry, further cementing Zumo's role in institutional onboarding.

What this means

The threat of quantum computing is often treated as a distant theoretical problem, but the "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" strategy makes it a present-day risk for any institution handling long-term sensitive data. This partnership signals a shift in the digital asset sector from focusing purely on immediate regulatory compliance to addressing long-term structural resilience. As central banks and major financial institutions move toward tokenized deposits and stablecoins, the underlying security must be able to withstand the lifespan of the asset. This move puts pressure on other infrastructure providers to prove their quantum readiness or risk obsolescence as the 2029-2035 window approaches.
