Benford Secures €5M Pre-Seed to Disrupt Europe’s €50B Audit Market with Tech-Native Firm
By Lauren Towner · 22 September 2026

Benford has raised €5m in pre-seed funding to launch a tech-native financial audit firm, aiming to disrupt the European mid-market. By integrating proprietary software with a licensed audit practice, the firm addresses rising fees and declining service quality in a sector where traditional players are increasingly withdrawing from smaller engagements to focus on larger corporate clients.
What was announced
Benford is positioning itself as a vertically integrated audit firm rather than a software vendor. The company holds a formal audit license in Norway and utilizes its proprietary "AuditOS" engine to manage the statutory audit process from start to finish. This model allows the firm to run the entire engagement, from connecting to client systems to issuing the final signed opinion. The €5m pre-seed round was led by firstminute capital, Global Founders Capital (GFC), and Sondo. Notable individual investors include Peter ter Maaten of HSO, Arthur Waller and Quentin de Metz of Pennylane, Alexandre Prot of Qonto, and the Spandow family of Amesto.
The firm’s AuditOS platform connects directly to the systems a company runs on, including ERPs, subledgers, banks, and other operational systems. This creates a centralized "audit brain" that logs every input and traces it back to its source, assigning it to a named auditor. By automating routine groundwork and groundwork testing, Benford aims to reduce the internal hours finance teams typically spend facilitating audits. The company currently consists of a team of twenty people and will use the new capital to grow its London and Oslo offices while taking the firm into Sweden and further European markets. The founders, Mads Bogen Øye, Thibault Mallion, and Andreas Rystad, bring experience from Palantir, Goldman Sachs, and One Peak.
"Audit is one of the few services where the customer experience has got worse every year while the bill has gone up. We are not changing what an audit is. We are changing how it is delivered."
Thibault Mallion, co-founder and co-CEO of Benford.
The companies involved
The investor pool for Benford includes several established names in the European fintech and enterprise software ecosystem. Qonto, founded by Alexandre Prot, has become a dominant player in SME banking and financial management, recently expanding its capabilities into certified accounting. Pennylane, represented in this round by founders Arthur Waller and Quentin de Metz, provides a financial management platform that bridges the gap between SMEs and their accountants. HSO, where investor Peter ter Maaten is involved, is a global Microsoft business applications partner, while Amesto is a Nordic-based group specializing in accounting, payroll, and HR services.
The venture capital backing comes from firstminute capital and Global Founders Capital (GFC), both of which have extensive portfolios in the fintech space. Benford itself enters the market at a time when the "Big Four" and other large consolidators are shifting focus away from the mid-market, leaving a gap for firms that can leverage high-level automation to maintain margins on smaller statutory engagements. The firm is currently hiring across both audit and engineering roles to support its expansion across Europe.

What this means
The audit industry is ripe for a "full-stack" challenger. For years, fintechs have tried to sell tools to the Big Four, only to find that legacy workflows and billable-hour incentives often stifle adoption. By becoming the auditor of record, Benford bypasses the resistance of incumbent firms. This move puts significant pressure on mid-tier accounting practices that lack the capital to build proprietary tech. The real test for the sector will be whether regulators across different European jurisdictions accept a "tech-first" approach to statutory opinions. If successful, it could force a decoupling of audit quality from human headcount, fundamentally changing the economics of the profession.
