Klarna has launched an in-app Call Status Detection feature in the Nordic region to combat the rising tide of phone-based impersonation fraud. For fintech professionals, this move signals a shift toward real-time, cross-channel authentication, addressing the €4 billion annual loss to European fraudsters by turning the mobile app into a live security validator.

What was announced

The new Call Status Detection tool is now live for Klarna users in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. The feature is designed to provide a definitive answer to whether a person on the other end of a phone call is a legitimate representative of the digital bank. Because caller ID spoofing has become a trivial task for sophisticated scammers, Klarna is bypassing traditional telephony signals in favor of its own encrypted app environment.

The user experience is built around immediate visual cues. When a customer receives a call from someone claiming to be from the company, they can open the Klarna app to see a status banner at the top of the interface. A green banner confirms the call is verified and it is safe to continue, while an amber banner indicates the call cannot be verified, serving as a direct instruction for the customer to hang up. This feature is enabled by default in the Klarna app for iOS users in the Nordics, while Android users must enable the feature within their app settings. The company stated that more regions are to follow.

This functionality complements the existing Klarna Inbox, which already handles the verification of written communications such as emails, text messages, and physical letters. The rollout addresses a significant pain point in European finance; according to the European Central Bank, fraudsters steal more than €4 billion annually across the continent through various impersonation and fraud schemes.

"Scammers are getting more sophisticated and we want to do everything we can to help consumers fight back. Adding Call Status Detection to our existing Inbox feature gives consumers an easy and quick way to verify what's real and keep their money safe."

The companies involved

Klarna is a global digital bank and provider of flexible payment solutions, perhaps best known for its pioneering role in the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) sector. Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, the company has evolved from a pure-play payment processor into a fully licensed bank offering a suite of consumer financial services. It operates in a highly competitive global market, contending with both traditional retail banks and other major fintech players in the credit and payments space.

The firm has maintained a significant presence in the Nordic markets since its inception, using the region as a testing ground for many of its technological innovations before broader international expansion. As a major player in the European fintech ecosystem, Klarna’s shift toward integrated security features reflects its broader strategy to deepen consumer trust and reduce the operational costs associated with financial crime. With a massive global user base, the company’s internal anti-fraud initiatives often set a benchmark for how digital-first banks manage the tension between user convenience and rigorous security protocols.

Recently, the company has focused on embedding its payment solutions into diverse merchant environments. This includes a partnership where Flex Dental Solutions Launches BNPL and Surcharging to Boost Practice Revenue, and a collaboration where Solidgate and Klarna Partner to Scale Flexible Payments Across Europe. Furthermore, the provider has moved into the SMB space, as Klarna Integrates with HubSpot to Bring Flexible BNPL Payments to SMBs. These reports highlight a consistent trend of Klarna moving beyond simple checkout buttons to become a core component of the broader financial infrastructure for both consumers and businesses.

What this means

This announcement highlights a critical pivot in the industry’s fight against social engineering. For years, banks have relied on reactive education—telling customers "we will never call you and ask for sensitive information"—which has largely failed to stop sophisticated spoofing. By moving the verification layer into the app, Klarna is effectively admitting that the traditional telephone network is too compromised to be trusted for secure communication. This puts pressure on other major retail banks and BNPL providers to offer similar real-time "proof of life" for their representatives. The industry is moving toward a model where the mobile app is the only trusted source of truth, potentially rendering traditional caller ID obsolete for financial services.
