JazzCash has launched an AI Foundry and usability testing lab at its Islamabad headquarters to integrate artificial intelligence and advanced eye-tracking technology into its product development cycle. For fintech professionals, this move signals a transition from basic financial inclusion to sophisticated, data-driven user experience optimization within one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.

What was announced

The new facility, established at the JazzCash headquarters in Islamabad, introduces a permanent capability for the company to combine artificial intelligence, customer research, and rapid prototyping. A central feature of the lab is its use of eye-tracking technology, which is the first of its kind in the region. This hardware allows researchers to record exactly where a user’s attention is directed, identifying specific points of friction or confusion that customers might not be able to articulate during traditional interviews or surveys. By capturing frame-by-frame data on customer behavior, product managers can test features and customer journeys directly with users, catching usability problems and validating fixes before they are deployed to the wider platform.

The launch coincides with the tenth anniversary of the JazzCash consumer app, marking its evolution from a basic money transfer and bill payment service into a comprehensive financial ecosystem. Today, the platform serves 62 million customers and operates the largest digital payment acceptance network in Pakistan, featuring 1.7 million Raast-enabled QR merchants. The infrastructure also supports a digital lending platform that issues more than 224,000 loans daily, alongside an online payment gateway and Insurtech services. This growth recently led to JazzCash being recognized as the first and only Pakistani fintech on the World's Top Fintech Companies ranking by CNBC and Statista. The inauguration was attended by senior leadership including Kaan Terzioglu, Ahmet Kayhan, Aamir Ibrahim, Murtaza Ali, and Haaris Chaudhary, setting a new direction for the platform's next phase of growth.

"Ten years gets you the infrastructure. The AI Foundry is how we make sure the next ten build something people actually need, letting the smallest shopkeeper build a storefront of their own, opening up new ways to save and invest, reaching the next person the formal economy hasn't gotten to yet."

Murtaza Ali, CEO of JazzCash.

The companies involved

JazzCash is the leading digital financial services provider in Pakistan and operates as a subsidiary of VEON Ltd., a global digital operator listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker VEON. The platform works in close coordination with Mobilink Microfinance Bank Ltd, which provides the banking infrastructure necessary for its diverse range of digital products. Mobilink Bank, accessible at mobilinkbank.com, is a key pillar of the group’s financial services strategy in the region. VEON Ltd. oversees a portfolio of connectivity and digital services, with JazzCash representing its largest digital financial services platform.

The leadership involved in the new facility includes Kaan Terzioglu, CEO of VEON Group, and Ahmet Kayhan, who serves as the Chief Payments and Digital Assets Officer at VEON. On the local front, Aamir Ibrahim serves as the Chairman of JazzCash and is also the CEO of Jazz, the telecommunications entity formerly known as Mobilink. Haaris Chaudhary leads the banking side of the operation as the CEO of Mobilink Bank. Together, these entities have built a network that bridges the gap between traditional telecommunications and formal financial services for millions of previously unbanked individuals, creating a dominant position in the Pakistani fintech landscape.

What this means

This move by JazzCash highlights a critical pivot in emerging market fintech: the shift from providing mere access to focusing on high-fidelity retention. As the Pakistani market matures, the competitive pressure is no longer just about signing up users, but about reducing the cognitive load of digital transactions for a diverse population. By investing in lab-grade eye-tracking and AI-driven prototyping, JazzCash is addressing the "friction gap" that often plagues super-apps as they scale. This raises a broader industry question: will high-tech usability labs become a prerequisite for fintechs in developing regions to maintain dominance against global players, or is this level of investment only sustainable for market leaders with massive existing user bases?
