Press Release: Molten Ventures Secures £175M First Close for New European Growth Fund | Featured Image by FF News

Molten Ventures has reached a £175 million first close for its new Growth Fund, specifically targeting Series B+ investments in UK and European technology firms. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant injection of late-stage capital into a market often hampered by a "funding gap" for scaling businesses moving beyond early-stage growth.

What was announced

The Growth Fund is designed to provide private institutional capital with a vehicle to invest at scale, leveraging the governance and platform of Molten’s existing public vehicle. While the first close stands at £175 million, the firm has set a final target of £350 million. The British Business Bank has acted as the cornerstone investor with a £75 million commitment, while Molten Ventures itself has committed the remaining £100 million of the initial close.

The strategy focuses on high-growth companies in sectors including Fintech, AI, Space, Quantum, Deeptech, and Hardware. By targeting Series B and beyond, the fund aims to bridge the critical liquidity gap that often forces European and UK companies to seek capital from overseas markets as they scale. This fund sits alongside Molten’s other strategies, such as Molten Secondaries, and follows a decade-long track record where the firm has invested over £700 million across more than 40 growth-profile deals. The fund is intended to allow Molten to build more substantial ownership positions in high-conviction businesses while providing the necessary capital for these firms to compete on a global stage.

"There is no shortage of exceptional founders or technology businesses in the UK and Europe; what they too often lack is sufficient growth capital to help them become global leaders. This Fund gives Molten greater firepower to back our highest-conviction companies at Series B and beyond, build meaningful ownership positions and channel capital into the next generation of growth."

Ben Wilkinson, Chief Executive Officer of Molten Ventures.

The companies involved

Molten Ventures plc, listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker GROW, is a venture capital firm with two decades of experience in the UK and European technology ecosystems. The firm focuses on disruptive high-growth companies and operates a listed platform that provides transparency and governance for institutional investors. Key leadership includes Chief Executive Officer Ben Wilkinson and Chief Financial Officer Andrew Zimmermann.

The British Business Bank is the UK’s government-owned economic development bank, established to improve access to finance for smaller businesses. It has maintained a relationship with Molten Ventures since 2018, when it first invested in the firm’s listed platform. Beyond fund-level investments, the Bank has co-invested with Molten in several prominent UK technology companies, including the cloud-native core banking platform Thought Machine, as well as SatVu, IMU Biosciences, and the semiconductor firm Paragraf. Robert Greenwood serves as the Senior Director, Funds at the British Business Bank, overseeing the strategy to deepen pools of late-stage capital for breakthrough technologies.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the British Business Bank’s efforts to stimulate the UK’s scaling ecosystem. We recently reported on this specific partnership in British Business Bank Backs Molten Ventures Growth Fund with £75m Commitment, highlighting the cornerstone nature of the investment.

The Bank’s activity extends across various tiers of the financial market. We previously covered their work in the SME sector in British Business Bank Unlocks £350m for UK SMEs via DF Capital ENABLE Guarantee, which focused on inventory finance. Additionally, the Bank’s regional support was highlighted in our report British Business Bank Allocates £17.5m to SWIG Finance for South West Small Business Support, demonstrating a multi-pronged approach to UK economic growth that spans from regional micro-loans to the global scale-up capital represented by the Molten Growth Fund.

What this means

The launch of this fund addresses the most persistent structural weakness in the European tech ecosystem: the "Series B crunch." While seed and Series A funding are relatively abundant, UK and European firms frequently struggle to find domestic lead investors for larger rounds, often leading to acquisitions by US entities or premature exits. By providing a dedicated £350 million pool, Molten is attempting to keep these high-conviction companies under local stewardship for longer. This move puts pressure on other domestic institutional players to match this level of commitment or risk losing influence over the next generation of fintech and deeptech champions to international private equity.
