Swiss fintech Helvo has launched its nationwide financial operating system for SMEs, aiming to reverse Switzerland’s recent decline in digital banking maturity. For fintech professionals, this launch represents a strategic attempt to consolidate fragmented banking, accounting, and administrative workflows into a single automated platform, addressing the manual inefficiencies that currently plague the Swiss small business sector.

What was announced

Following a limited beta phase that commenced in June, Helvo has officially opened its platform to the broader Swiss market. The core offering is a comprehensive business account featuring both CHF and EUR IBANs, designed to be opened within a 48-to-72-hour window, subject to standard regulatory approvals. The system is built to serve two distinct segments: entrepreneurs in the process of company formation and established SMEs seeking to modernize their existing financial infrastructure.

For new founders, Helvo provides capital deposit accounts, facilitating a streamlined transition from initial company formation to an active operational business account. For established enterprises, the platform utilizes Switzerland’s bLink open banking infrastructure. This allows businesses to integrate their existing bank accounts into the Helvo ecosystem, enabling them to utilize intelligent automation and connected workflows without the necessity of switching their primary banking relationships. This connectivity is central to Helvo’s value proposition, as it links transactions directly to business records and supporting documentation.

The platform focuses on reducing the administrative burden by automating tasks such as reconciliation, invoice processing, and bookkeeping. By centralizing this data, Helvo allows SMEs to share real-time financial insights with accountants, fiduciaries, and other professional partners. Subscription plans for the service start at CHF 39 per month, with a scalable model that allows for additional usage of accounts, cards, and transaction services as a business grows. As part of the nationwide rollout, the company is offering the first month of service free to new customers and has set a target of onboarding 500 Swiss businesses by the end of 2026.

"Most small businesses don’t have a shortage of financial data. The problem is that it sits in different places and nobody has the time to put it together. For many SMEs, having a CFO or dedicated finance team simply isn’t realistic. By connecting transactions, invoices and accounting data in real time, Helvo gives entrepreneurs a trusted view of cash flow, runway and financial performance. That helps them make better-informed decisions around spending, hiring and investment, without having to assemble the picture manually every time."

The companies involved

Helvo is a Swiss fintech firm led by CEO and co-founder Julien Barbotin-Larrieu. The company positions itself as a technology provider rather than a licensed bank, focusing on the software layer that connects various financial and administrative requirements for the Swiss SME market. Its platform is designed to act as a "financial operating system" that sits between the business owner and the underlying regulated financial infrastructure.

To provide its banking services, Helvo partners with Hypothekarbank Lenzburg AG, a well-established Swiss bank supervised by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA). Hypothekarbank Lenzburg, which operates the website hbl.ch, acts as the custodian for customer funds. This partnership ensures that all deposits are protected up to the statutory limit of CHF 100,000 under the Swiss deposit insurance scheme, esisuisse. By combining its proprietary technology with Hypothekarbank Lenzburg’s regulated infrastructure, Helvo is able to offer fully compliant Swiss bank accounts while maintaining the agility of a fintech startup. This model also allows Helvo to potentially facilitate faster SME financing in the future by providing regulated lending partners with clearer, real-time accounting and transaction data for credit assessments.

What this means

The launch of Helvo highlights a growing urgency within the Swiss fintech sector to address the nation's slipping digital competitiveness. Switzerland’s fall from 5th to 27th in digital banking maturity since 2018 suggests that traditional incumbents have been slow to innovate for the SME segment. This creates a significant opening for "operating system" models that prioritize data integration over simple transaction processing. By leveraging the bLink infrastructure, Helvo is putting pressure on traditional banks to either improve their own digital interfaces or risk becoming mere "dumb pipes" for more agile third-party platforms. The success of this model will likely depend on how quickly Swiss SMEs move away from manual, spreadsheet-based bookkeeping toward fully integrated, real-time financial management.
