Gatehouse Bank Launches Community Saver Account to Combat Youth Homelessness with Depaul UK
By Lauren Towner · 8 October 2026

Gatehouse Bank has launched a one-year fixed-term Community Saver Account to support youth homelessness charity Depaul UK. This move highlights a growing trend in ethical banking where financial institutions integrate social impact directly into product structures, allowing fintech professionals to observe how ESG goals can be operationalised through specific, transparent deposit mechanisms.
What was announced
Gatehouse Bank has launched a one-year fixed-term Community Saver Account to support its charity partner, Depaul UK. The product arrives as data reveals that between 2024 and 2025, a young person aged 16-24 in the UK became homeless or at risk of homelessness approximately every four minutes. The account is designed for both new and existing UK customers and requires a minimum deposit of £1,000. It offers an expected profit rate (EPR) of 4.15%.
The account functions through a shared contribution mechanism where customers accept a profit rate 0.05% lower than the bank’s standard Fixed Term Deposit rate. Gatehouse Bank then matches this contribution, resulting in a total donation to Depaul UK equivalent to 0.10% of the deposit. These contributions are transparent, measurable, and administered directly by the bank. This initiative follows a successful partnership that has already raised over £25,000 for the charity since January 2025. The funds raised will assist Depaul UK in providing emergency accommodation, such as its Nightstop service which costs £53 to host a young person for one night, as well as longer-term housing solutions and prevention programmes.
The launch builds on the bank's existing ESG framework, specifically its Woodland Saver Accounts introduced five years ago. While those accounts focus on environmental impact by planting trees in UK woodland projects, the Community Saver Account allows customers to choose a social impact cause. This choice is significant given that over a third (35%) of UK consumers have expressed a willingness to learn more about ethical savings products. The account can be opened and managed online or via the Gatehouse Bank Savings app.
"The money raised really will make a difference to the young people we support. It costs just £53 to host a young person in crisis with Nightstop, our emergency accommodation. Trained and vetted Nightstop hosts provide a safe place to sleep, a hot meal, toiletries and a warm welcome to someone who has nowhere else to turn. We are so grateful to everyone who chooses to open an account and support Depaul UK."
Alexia Murphy, CEO of Depaul UK.
The companies involved
Gatehouse Bank is a UK-based institution that positions itself as an ethically conscious bank within the retail savings and home finance market. The bank focuses on providing products that align financial goals with ethical values, a strategy that has seen it introduce initiatives like the Woodland Saver Accounts. These accounts link fixed-term deposits and cash ISAs to UK woodland projects certified by the government’s Woodland Carbon Code. By offering these products, the bank targets a growing segment of the UK population interested in ESG-aligned financial services.
Depaul UK is a specialist charity dedicated to addressing youth homelessness across the United Kingdom. The organisation provides a range of critical services including emergency accommodation through its Nightstop network, which utilizes trained and vetted hosts to provide safe places to sleep, hot meals, and toiletries. Beyond emergency crisis support, Depaul UK operates longer-term supported housing solutions, family support programmes, and prevention work in schools. Recent figures indicate the charity provided 5,871 safe nights’ accommodation and reached 11,152 people through its various services. The partnership between the bank and the charity, which began in early 2025, has now been extended through to December 2027, representing a long-term commitment to integrating social impact into the bank's core retail offering.
What this means
This announcement signals a shift in how ethical banks compete for deposits. By offering a "Community Saver" alongside an "Environmental Saver," Gatehouse is testing whether consumers value choice in their social impact as much as they do in their financial returns. For the wider fintech sector, this move puts pressure on mainstream "challenger" banks that often rely on generic ESG claims without the transparent, measurable donation mechanics seen here. The challenge for the industry remains whether these niche ethical products can achieve the scale necessary to compete with high-yield leaders, or if they will remain a secondary choice for socially conscious savers.
