DBS has launched two new card products, Chromo and TravelLah!, specifically targeting the Gen Z demographic in Singapore. By automating reward structures and removing foreign exchange fees, the bank is attempting to capture a high-spending segment that prioritises flexibility and ease of use in travel, dining, and retail categories.

What was announced

The launch includes Chromo, a credit card, and TravelLah!, a debit card, both released on 5 September. Chromo is positioned as the first credit card in Singapore designed to automatically adjust to the spending habits of users aged 21 to 29. It removes the requirement for cardholders to pre-select reward categories. Instead, the card identifies the top two local spending categories each month and applies up to 5% cashback to those transactions, with a 1% rate on other eligible local spending. Users also have the option to switch between earning cashback or miles once per month without losing their existing rewards.

The TravelLah! Debit Card focuses on international spending, utilising Visa exchange rates without additional markups from DBS and featuring zero foreign exchange fees. This aligns with DBS research indicating that travel, shopping, and dining are the primary expenditure areas for its 21-to-29-year-old cardholders, representing 25%, 24%, and 22% of their average spend respectively. Both cards offer zero foreign exchange fees on overseas spending, a feature designed to appeal to the high travel frequency of this age group.

Both cards offer access to curated deals with discounts reaching 50% at partners including Trip.com, Agoda, Klook, Shopee, TikTok Shop, Birds of Paradise, and Haidilao. These benefits extend to merchant offers in popular travel destinations such as Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, providing a comprehensive ecosystem for young adults navigating shifts in income and financial priorities.

"With Chromo, we are turning the traditional card rewards model around. Instead of asking cardholders to decide upfront where they expect to spend, Chromo does the work for them and automatically awards bonus cashback based on where they spend most each month."

The companies involved

DBS is a major financial services group in Asia, headquartered in Singapore. The bank has been increasingly active in digitising its retail offerings to maintain its market position against emerging digital-only competitors. This latest product launch leverages a broad network of partners across the travel and e-commerce sectors to create a lifestyle-integrated financial product.

The cards are supported by Visa, a global leader in digital payments that facilitates transactions between consumers, merchants, and financial institutions across more than 200 countries and territories. The partner ecosystem includes Trip.com and Agoda, both major players in the online travel agency space, and Klook, which specialises in travel experiences and services.

On the retail side, the inclusion of Shopee and TikTok Shop highlights the bank's focus on the "social commerce" and e-commerce habits of younger consumers. Shopee is a dominant e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, while TikTok Shop represents the growing trend of integrated shopping within social media environments. Other lifestyle partners include the hotpot chain Haidilao and the boutique creamery Birds of Paradise, reflecting the specific dining preferences identified in DBS’s consumer spending data.

What FF News has reported before

DBS has recently been focused on advancing its technical infrastructure for cross-border transactions. FF News reported that DBS and Citi Complete First Weekend USD Cross-Border Payment via Swift Digital Ledger, a move that demonstrated the bank's capability in enabling instant, 24/7 cross-border USD payments using tokenisation. This technical foundation in cross-border efficiency complements the consumer-facing foreign exchange benefits seen in the TravelLah! and Chromo products.

Furthermore, the retail partners involved in this launch are frequently featured in FF News coverage. Visa has been the subject of hundreds of reports regarding payment innovation, while travel and e-commerce entities like Trip.com, Agoda, Shopee, and Klook have been covered extensively as they expand their payment and loyalty integrations across the Asia-Pacific region to capture the post-pandemic travel surge.

What this means

This move signals a shift in the credit card market from static reward structures to dynamic, algorithmic personalisation. By automating the cashback process, DBS is addressing a significant friction point for Gen Z users who may find traditional "preferred category" cards too restrictive or administratively burdensome. The removal of foreign exchange fees on both credit and debit products puts direct pressure on fintech "neobanks" and travel-focused multi-currency wallets that have historically used low-fee FX as their primary customer acquisition tool. The success of this strategy will likely depend on whether the "automatic" reward calculation is transparent enough to build long-term trust with a demographic that is highly sensitive to hidden fees and complex terms.
