Press Release: Azerbaijan’s Bir Scales Digital Banking Ecosystem to 5 Million Users | Featured Image by FF News

Bir, the integrated financial ecosystem from Azerbaijan, has detailed its rapid scaling to five million users—representing half the nation's population—at Istanbul Fintech Week 2026. This milestone demonstrates how legacy-backed digital platforms can dominate emerging markets by unifying banking, e-commerce, and payments into a single, high-engagement ecosystem that challenges traditional fintech disruption narratives.

What was announced

At the Digital Banking Summit in Istanbul, Javid Mirzayev, CEO of Fintech Business at Bir and First Deputy Chairman of Kapital Bank, presented the roadmap for Azerbaijan’s national digital financial services. Since its launch in 2025, the Bir ecosystem has achieved a 50% penetration rate in its home market. The platform functions as a "super-app" model, integrating Kapital Bank’s digital banking brand, Birbank, with the Birmarket online marketplace, the m10 digital wallet, and the Milliön payment terminal network.

The integration is underpinned by three core tools: Bir ID for unified access, Bir Bonus for loyalty rewards, and Bir Pay for online and in-store transactions. This architecture allows for cross-service functionality, such as customers accessing Birbank financing directly at the Birmarket checkout. Mirzayev reported that 90% of the ecosystem's customers now utilize the Birbank app for their daily banking needs, signaling a massive shift away from traditional branch-based interactions.

Operational efficiency has also seen significant gains through automation. Currently, 60% of all customer support requests within the ecosystem are resolved entirely without human intervention, a substantial increase from the 31% recorded the previous year. This presentation follows Bir’s recent appearance at Money 20/20 Middle East, where the company’s CEO, Farid Huseynov, discussed the role of AI and digital payments in driving Azerbaijan’s broader economic growth and the development of intelligent financial institutions.

"At Bir, we connected banking, payments, and shopping under a single umbrella to simplify everyday life. We are showing the international community that legacy banks don't have to be disrupted by fintechs. By adapting to practical customer needs, they can lead the digital shift."

The companies involved

Bir operates as the Caucasus region’s first integrated banking, payments, and e-commerce ecosystem. It is closely tied to Kapital Bank OJSC, one of Azerbaijan’s largest financial institutions. Kapital Bank provides the regulatory and financial backbone for the Birbank brand, while the broader Bir ecosystem, accessible via bir.az, has positioned itself as a central pillar of Azerbaijan’s digital economy. The ecosystem bridges the gap between traditional cash-based transactions and modern digital finance through a variety of specialized platforms.

The ecosystem’s reach is extended through both physical and digital touchpoints, including the Milliön payment terminals, which maintain a significant presence across Azerbaijan, and the m10 digital wallet, which targets the digital-first segments of the population. By leveraging the established infrastructure of Kapital Bank while operating with the agility of a fintech, Bir has managed to capture half the national market in a remarkably short timeframe. This hybrid model—where a legacy institution builds and scales its own disruptive ecosystem—serves as a significant case study for digital transformation in emerging markets where traditional banking infrastructure is being rapidly augmented by mobile-first solutions.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked Bir’s ascent within the global fintech landscape over the past year. In July 2026, the company achieved a significant milestone when Bir was named among the world’s top fintechs by CNBC and Statista, marking a historic first for an Azerbaijani firm. The company has also been active in sector-specific digitization, such as when Bir partnered with İİQA and Clopos to digitise Azerbaijan’s hospitality sector.

Innovation in user experience has been a recurring theme in our coverage, notably with the launch of Ey-ay, Azerbaijan’s first AI-powered e-wallet assistant within the m10 app. More recently, the company’s leadership appeared on the global stage to discuss Azerbaijan’s rapid cash-to-digital shift at Money20/20 Middle East, highlighting the speed at which the region is adopting integrated financial technologies and moving away from physical currency.

What this means

The success of the Bir ecosystem signals a shift in how legacy banks in emerging markets approach the threat of fintech disruption. Rather than ceding ground to agile startups, Kapital Bank has successfully internalised the "super-app" model popularized in Asia, proving that incumbent institutions can maintain dominance if they control the entire value chain—from payments to credit to retail. This puts significant pressure on standalone fintechs in the region who lack the balance sheet and existing customer base of a national bank. The primary question for the sector now is whether this "built-in" ecosystem model can be replicated in more fragmented European markets where regulatory hurdles and established competition are more pronounced.
