Axis Bank Launches Industry-First UPI Limit Management and Travel Controls
3 September 2026

Axis Bank has launched a granular UPI limit management tool and an international travel declaration feature to enhance digital payment security. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant shift toward user-led fraud prevention, allowing customers to self-regulate transaction thresholds across the Unified Payments Interface ecosystem and reduce false positives during cross-border travel.
What was announced
Axis Bank’s new UPI Limit Management feature is an industry first in India, enabling users to define specific transaction caps for different payment categories. Through the Axis Mobile Banking App, customers can set individual limits for Person-to-Person (P2P), Domestic Merchant, and International Merchant transactions. Crucially, these settings are not limited to the bank's own app; they apply across all third-party UPI applications linked to the user’s Axis Bank account, creating a centralized security hub. Users access this via the Safety Centre in the app, where changes are authenticated using MPIN and OTP verification. Currently, the feature is available to a select group of customers with a full rollout expected shortly.
Simultaneously, the bank introduced the International Travel Declaration for credit cardholders. This allows customers to digitally log their travel itineraries before going abroad. By integrating this intent into the bank’s risk assessment models, Axis Bank aims to minimize the frequency of genuine transactions being flagged as suspicious or declined when they occur in unfamiliar geographic locations. This self-service capability is found within the Credit Card Control Center of the mobile app, providing real-time confirmations through in-app notifications and SMS alerts to ensure the customer is aware of their current security posture.
"At Axis Bank, Safe Banking is about empowering customers with greater control and confidence in how they manage their finances. As digital payments continue to evolve, customers increasingly expect banking experiences that are secure, seamless and tailored to their needs. Our industry-first UPI Limit Management feature enables customers to set and manage transaction limits across different UPI payment categories, while International Travel Declaration helps deliver a smoother international payments experience by incorporating customer travel intent into the Bank's risk assessment process. Together, these capabilities give customers greater control over how they transact, while reinforcing safety and convenience across their payment journeys. These innovations reflect our continued focus on delivering customer-centric solutions that make banking intuitive, secure and relevant in an increasingly digital world."

The companies involved
Axis Bank stands as one of India’s largest private sector financial institutions, offering a full suite of banking services to a diverse customer base ranging from individuals to large corporations. The bank has established a significant footprint in the Indian market, positioning itself as a leader in digital transformation and retail banking. It operates across various segments, including treasury, retail banking, and corporate banking. In the competitive Indian fintech landscape, Axis Bank has frequently sought to differentiate itself through technological partnerships and the adoption of emerging payment standards.
The bank’s strategy often involves integrating its core banking services with the broader digital ecosystem, particularly the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has become the dominant method for retail transactions in the country. By focusing on "Safe Banking" initiatives, the institution aims to maintain trust as transaction volumes scale. The bank’s digital infrastructure is designed to handle high-frequency retail payments while maintaining the robust risk management frameworks required of a major private lender in a market increasingly targeted by sophisticated digital fraud.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has previously tracked Axis Bank’s momentum in digital innovation and customer experience. The bank recently received a CX Excellence Award for AI-Driven Journey Analytics Powered by NUMR Inc., highlighting its use of data to refine user interactions. In the payments space, the bank partnered with Flipkart and PayU to introduce biometric authentication for card transactions, and collaborated with boAt and Mastercard for smartwatch-based payments. Furthermore, Axis Bank was involved when Mastercard selected India for the global launch of its Payment Passkey Service, reinforcing the bank's role in bringing global security standards to the domestic market.
What this means
This announcement highlights a critical pivot in the Indian banking sector: the move from reactive fraud detection to proactive, user-defined security. As UPI transaction volumes reach record highs, the "one-size-fits-all" security model is under immense pressure. By allowing users to ringfence specific transaction types, Axis Bank is effectively offloading some risk management to the customer, while simultaneously reducing the friction of false declines. This puts pressure on other major private lenders to offer similar granular controls. The industry question now is whether such manual controls will remain a niche feature for "power users" or become a mandatory standard for all digital banking apps in India.
