The British Business Bank has deployed £180 million into six venture capital and growth equity funds to strengthen the United Kingdom’s AI and deeptech ecosystem. For fintech and technology professionals, this represents a strategic injection of liquidity designed to ensure that high-potential innovators can access the capital required to scale domestically rather than seeking primary funding from overseas markets.

What was announced

The British Business Bank confirmed a total commitment of £180 million distributed across six specialized funds. This capital is intended to support UK-based AI companies at various stages of development, from initial inception and pre-seed rounds through to Series B and later growth stages. The specific fund commitments include:

  • £35 million to Crane III: A fund backing founders from inception through seed, focusing on foundational technologies at the intersection of AI, software, infrastructure, and deep science.
  • £20 million to Connect V: This fund targets technical founders at the pre-seed stage, specifically those working on AI, hardware, and real-world automation.
  • £22 million ($30 million) to Entrepreneurs First’s Early Stage Fund: This supports leaders emerging from the EF platform at Seed, Series A, and Series B, including AI infrastructure firms.
  • £55 million ($75 million) to Intrepid Growth Partners Fund I: A specialist AI growth investor with an inaugural $525 million fund dedicated to building global champions.
  • £26 million (€30 million) to Headline EU VIII: A $400 million fund focused on European Seed and Series A companies with a primary interest in AI.
  • £22 million ($29 million) to Evantic Fund I: A growth-stage fund partnering with transformative, globally-focused AI companies.

In addition to these fund-level commitments, the Bank is engaging in direct investment. This includes a recent £10 million investment in Salience Labs, an Oxford spinout developing optical switching technology. Other recent direct investments by the Bank include Wayve, Kraken Technologies, PhysicsX, PolyAI, and Ineffable Intelligence.

"The UK has no shortage of ideas or talent. The problem is that our funding landscape does not currently match our technical excellence. This is what the Bank is changing. These commitments are part of our strategy to create deeper pools of funding at all stages of growth, helping companies to access greater capital domestically and allowing the UK to capture more of the economic value of its innovation."

Leandros Kalisperas, Chief Investment Officer of the British Business Bank.

The companies involved

The British Business Bank is the UK’s government-owned development bank, dedicated to increasing the supply of credit to small and medium-sized enterprises and providing equity backing to high-growth sectors. It operates as a cornerstone of the UK's Modern Industrial Strategy, particularly within the digital and technology sectors. Entrepreneur First, one of the recipients, has maintained a relationship with the Bank since 2016, when the institution anchored EF’s first institutional fund. EF focuses on talent-led venture creation, helping individuals build companies from scratch.

Other key players in this announcement include Evantic Capital, founded by Matt Miller, which positions itself as a bridge between Silicon Valley and the UK. Evantic has already committed over £150 million to UK businesses and has facilitated the opening of London offices for nine of its non-UK portfolio companies. Intrepid Growth Partners, co-founded by Mark Machin, provides long-term growth capital, while Headline EU VIII represents the European arm of the global VC firm Headline. These organizations collectively represent a shift toward specialized, sector-focused investment rather than generalist venture capital.

What this means

This announcement moves the needle by addressing the "scale-up gap" that has historically forced UK deeptech firms to look toward US markets for growth-stage capital. By backing specialist funds like Intrepid and Evantic, the British Business Bank is signaling that the UK intends to move from being a "taker" of AI technology to a "maker" with sovereign capabilities. This puts pressure on traditional, generalist VCs to demonstrate deeper technical expertise to compete for the best deals. However, the move raises questions about whether £180 million is sufficient to compete with the massive capital reserves of Silicon Valley, particularly as AI infrastructure costs continue to skyrocket globally.
