Quick Summary

In this episode of Horizon 2030 for Banking from Red Hat, Dario Molinari, Senior Solutions Architect, discusses the approach to regulation he has encountered in financial institutions, the abstraction layers Red Hat uses, and the case for rebuilding infrastructure rather than restoring it.

What Approach to Regulation Has He Seen?

Dario describes what he calls an old-fashioned approach: look at what the fine would be, then decide whether complying is more or less expensive than continuing as before. In his experience that has often been the parameter of choice, and he suggests it may not be the most efficient one. He notes that it works against tactical decisions such as moving to cloud, because regulation requires the ability to replicate or repatriate all systems within very short time windows.

How Does Red Hat Approach the Problem?

Different organisations have created abstraction layers at different points: the operating system, the orchestration system or the data layer. Red Hat's view, as Dario puts it, is a full-stack abstraction.

  • Linux, containers and container orchestration are each abstraction layers.
  • Automation tools allow those layers to be moved wherever needed, on premises or on any cloud.

Rebuild or Restore?

Dario summarises the requirement as the ability to rebuild everything from scratch in a short time span. He observes that many traditional organisations still rely on replication, backup and restore, and the practices that go with them. Describing himself as a long-standing DevOps convert, he argues that by separating storage from infrastructure, an organisation can rebuild its infrastructure much faster than it can restore a virtual machine.
