Suncoast Credit Union Pledges $500,000 to Support Bethune-Cookman University Over Next Decade
By Lauren Towner · 24 September 2026

Suncoast Credit Union has committed $550,000 to Bethune-Cookman University, marking a significant expansion of its educational investment strategy following its merger with Launch Credit Union. For fintech professionals, this move underscores how credit unions are leveraging M&A activity to scale community impact and deepen member loyalty through targeted, long-term philanthropic partnerships.
What was announced
Suncoast Credit Union announced a multi-layered financial commitment to Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU), a private historically Black university in Daytona Beach. The immediate contribution consists of a $50,000 donation this fall to support homecoming activities and academic success programs that engage students, faculty, and alumni. Beyond this initial gift, the credit union has pledged an additional $50,000 annually over the next 10 years, representing a total contribution of $500,000 to support B-CU students and programs.
This decade-long commitment continues a charitable giving partnership originally established by Launch Credit Union, which recently merged with Suncoast Credit Union. Through this merger, Suncoast is carrying forward a legacy of support for students in Brevard and Volusia counties. The financial support is complemented by an active on-campus presence, including financial education workshops, career fairs, and internship hiring pathways. To date, Suncoast team members have engaged with more than 800 B-CU students regarding their financial well-being.
The funding is largely driven by the "Pennies Add Up" program, which contributes four cents to the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation every time a member uses a Suncoast debit or credit card. This year, the credit union and its foundation will invest approximately $3.75 million in schools and scholarships statewide. Since 1990, the Foundation has provided more than $68 million in funding to organizations that demonstrate measurable impact on the education and health of children.
"Together, the immediate gift and long-term commitment reflect Suncoast's dedication to higher education, student achievement and strong communities across Florida. Our partnership with Bethune-Cookman University is built on a shared commitment to student success, and we look forward to helping students and educators succeed for years to come."

The companies involved
Suncoast Credit Union is a major player in the Florida financial services market, originally founded by educators in 1934. This heritage informs its current focus on educational philanthropy and community-centric banking. The institution has grown significantly through organic expansion and strategic mergers, recently absorbing Launch Credit Union to solidify its footprint in the Brevard and Volusia county regions. Its charitable arm, the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation, was established in 1990 and has since distributed tens of millions of dollars to tax-exempt organizations throughout its service area.
Bethune-Cookman University, the recipient of the latest funding round, is a historically Black university (HBCU) located in Daytona Beach. The university serves as a critical educational hub in Florida, focusing on student success both inside and outside the classroom. Suncoast’s involvement with the university extends beyond simple capital injection, incorporating the institution into its broader workforce development and financial literacy initiatives. The credit union’s model relies heavily on member participation, specifically through transaction-linked giving programs that keep capital within the local communities where its members live and work.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely tracked Suncoast Credit Union’s aggressive philanthropic and community engagement schedule throughout 2026. Earlier this month, we reported that Suncoast Credit Union Awards Record $3.75M in Florida Education Funding, which remains the largest investment in the foundation's history. The credit union has also leveraged sports and entertainment partnerships to drive community value, as seen in Suncoast Credit Union Partners with Busch Gardens Tampa Bay for Exclusive Member Perks. Additionally, the institution has focused on youth development through high-profile collaborations, such as when Suncoast Credit Union and Rays Star Junior Caminero Raise Thousands for Tampa Youth Baseball, following an initial media advisory regarding the fundraiser.
What this means
This commitment highlights a growing trend where credit unions use social responsibility as a primary differentiator against national banks and digital-only neobanks. By embedding themselves into the fabric of HBCUs and local universities, credit unions are securing a pipeline of future members and employees while fulfilling ESG mandates. The decision to honor a ten-year commitment from a merged entity is a strategic move to maintain trust during post-merger integration. It puts pressure on other regional players to match this level of long-term financial transparency. The industry must now consider whether transaction-linked giving models will become the standard for community-focused fintech engagement.
