Stanchion Payments has appointed Carlin Wicomb as Regional Managing Director: Africa to lead its strategic expansion across Sub-Saharan markets. For fintech professionals, this move signals a concerted effort to scale overlay payment technologies and managed services within existing banking infrastructures, addressing the urgent demand for modernization without the systemic risks of total core replacement.

What was announced

Stanchion Payments has appointed Carlin Wicomb as Regional Managing Director: Africa. Wicomb, who brings more than 15 years of experience in payments and fintech across Africa and other emerging markets, is tasked with driving the company’s expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa. His background includes significant technical and commercial leadership roles, specifically in the areas of issuing, acquiring, and switching. Notably, he previously oversaw a cardless grant disbursement solution that supported approximately 9 million beneficiaries in South Africa.

In his new capacity, Wicomb will focus on the regional development of Payment Fabric™, Stanchion’s proprietary overlay technology. This platform is designed to allow financial institutions to implement modern features—such as tokenization, digital wallet enablement, card security, and PIN management—directly on top of their existing legacy systems. This approach aims to facilitate modernization without the operational disruption of replacing core infrastructure. Additionally, Wicomb will lead the growth of Stanchion’s ACI Postilion business. This involves providing managed services and technical expertise to existing Postilion customers while seeking new partnerships. The goal is to provide financial institutions with the continuity required to run and evolve their high-availability payment platforms in a region where the payments landscape is rapidly shifting toward digital-first solutions.

"Africa's payments landscape is evolving fast, and there's a real opportunity to help financial institutions modernise without the cost and disruption of ripping out what already works. That's what drew me to Stanchion Payments, the chance to bring practical, proven technology to markets I know well, and to help banks in the region move forward with confidence,"

The companies involved

Stanchion Payments specializes in payment system management and modernization, particularly through its Payment Fabric™ platform and its expertise in ACI Postilion environments. The firm positions itself as a bridge for financial institutions looking to integrate modern digital services like tokenization and digital wallets without replacing their core legacy infrastructure. Carlin Wicomb joins the firm from Mastercard, where he served as Director, Products and Solutions, bringing a background that includes managing high-availability platforms and large-scale disbursement solutions.

ACI Worldwide, a key technology provider mentioned in the context of Stanchion’s Postilion business, is a global leader in mission-critical, real-time payments software. Headquartered in the United States, ACI provides the underlying technology that powers electronic payments for thousands of organizations worldwide. Stanchion’s role in this ecosystem is often as a managed services provider, helping banks run and evolve these complex ACI environments. The appointment of a dedicated regional lead for Africa underscores the continent's importance as a high-growth market for both legacy maintenance and new overlay technologies.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively covered the global activities of ACI Worldwide, particularly its role in enabling real-time payment infrastructures. We recently reported on how ACI Worldwide and EPI to Power Instant Payments in Europe, a move designed to challenge dominant card schemes. In a similar vein of regional modernization, we covered how ACI Worldwide Powers Rabobank’s Wero Instant Payments, Advancing Europe’s Real-Time Payments Transformation, highlighting the shift toward instant settlement. Furthermore, the company’s expansion into emerging markets was noted when ACI Worldwide and dLocal Partner to Unlock Latin American Alternative Payments for Global Merchants, demonstrating a strategy of bridging global merchants with local payment methods.

What this means

The appointment of a regional lead with deep experience at a major scheme like Mastercard highlights a shift in how fintech service providers approach the African market. The industry is moving away from the "rip and replace" philosophy, which has historically stalled digital transformation due to high costs and technical risk. By focusing on overlay capabilities like Payment Fabric™, Stanchion is betting that banks will prioritize speed-to-market for features like digital wallets and tokenization over total core renewal. This puts pressure on traditional core banking vendors who may struggle to offer the same level of modularity. The dual focus on ACI Postilion also suggests that the maintenance of existing payment "plumbing" remains a lucrative and necessary service niche in the region.
