OakNorth has entered the youth savings market with the launch of its first Junior Cash ISA, offering a 3.5% AER. This move signals a strategic expansion for the digital bank, targeting long-term family wealth and bridging the gap between its established adult savings franchise and its extensive lending portfolio within the UK childcare sector.

What was announced

The new Junior Cash ISA (JISA) represents OakNorth’s first dedicated product for savers under the age of 18 in its 11-year history. The account offers a 3.5% AER and allows parents or guardians to deposit up to £9,000 per year tax-free. Funds remain locked until the child reaches 18, at which point the account converts to an adult ISA. Deposits are protected up to £120,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which is higher than the standard £85,000 limit for individual accounts.

At launch, the product is available for children aged 14 and under. Accounts can be opened with as little as £1 via the OakNorth mobile app or online portal, with the bank stating that the setup process takes under 10 minutes. OakNorth also supports the transfer of existing JISAs held with other providers without impacting the child’s annual tax-free allowance.

To differentiate the offering in a competitive savings market, OakNorth has partnered with the childcare platform Bubble to provide two hours of free babysitting to new JISA customers. The bank is also exploring additional partnerships by leveraging its existing commercial lending relationships with childcare and nursery groups, such as Storal, Kinderzimmer, and ICP Educare, alongside the retailer Mamas & Papas, to provide further practical benefits to its retail saving customers.

"We've spent over a decade helping hundreds of thousands of British adults make their money go further. The Junior Cash ISA is the natural next step - a way to bring the same trust, security and straightforward experience to families saving for their children's futures. We want to make it easier for families to start saving for their children’s futures - 85% of young people in the UK don’t currently have a JISA, so there’s huge, untapped potential here."

The companies involved

OakNorth is a prominent UK digital bank that has established itself as a key player in the mid-market lending and retail savings space. Since its inception, the firm has focused heavily on providing debt finance to "the missing middle"—scale-up businesses that are often underserved by traditional high-street banks. Its savings franchise already includes Easy Access and Fixed Rate Cash ISAs, which are utilised by hundreds of thousands of adult customers. The bank has maintained a strong presence in the UK childcare and education sectors through its commercial lending arm, supporting various nursery groups and specialist retailers.

Bubble is a digital platform designed to connect parents with trusted childcare providers and babysitters across the UK. By partnering with OakNorth, the company aims to increase the accessibility of childcare services for working families. While OakNorth has been a frequent subject of industry reporting, Bubble represents a newer entrant into the fintech partnership ecosystem, focusing on the intersection of lifestyle services and financial products for young families who require flexible childcare solutions.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed OakNorth’s activity in the UK lending market, recently reporting on its participation in a club loan to specialist care provider, Kisimul Group, which supported the development of new supported living sites. The bank also recently backed EET Retail’s acquisition of SGN Retail through a £250 million club loan deal. Additionally, OakNorth’s involvement in the insurance sector was highlighted when it provided a loan to Noble Insurance Group to acquire a specialist intermediary. Beyond lending, OakNorth has been identified as one of the leading European financial services firms delivering impact with OpenAI, showcasing its commitment to integrating advanced technology into its operations.

What this means

OakNorth’s entry into the JISA market highlights a growing trend of digital banks attempting to capture the "cradle-to-grave" customer lifecycle. By targeting the 85% of young people currently without a JISA, OakNorth is moving into a space where traditional incumbents have long held sway through customer inertia. The inclusion of non-financial perks like childcare credits suggests that the battle for retail deposits is shifting away from pure interest rate competition toward holistic ecosystem value. This puts pressure on other neo-banks to diversify their family offerings beyond simple "pocket money" cards and into more complex, tax-wrapped long-term savings vehicles that appeal to high-earning parents.
