Block, Inc. has launched "Bitcoin Does," its first major consumer advertising campaign designed to transition bitcoin from a speculative asset to a functional currency. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant attempt by a market leader to bridge the gap between retail crypto ownership and real-world merchant utility across its massive ecosystem.

What was announced

The "Bitcoin Does" campaign is a multi-channel initiative targeting the estimated 60 million "bitcoin curious" Americans. Block’s internal research suggests that while awareness of the digital asset is high, practical understanding remains low, with approximately 22% of U.S. adults having never owned bitcoin despite being open to using it. The campaign aims to demystify the technology by showcasing relatable, everyday scenarios where bitcoin serves as a practical medium of exchange.

The creative execution, directed by Alec Sutherland with creative development by GrandArmy, consists of five 15-second films and a 30-second compilation. These films are set in familiar environments such as nail salons, vinyl record shops, and flower shops. Each segment highlights common financial frustrations—including rising rent, inflation, and complex loan terms—positioning bitcoin as a logical alternative. Practical use cases demonstrated in the campaign include splitting dinner bills with friends and purchasing floral bouquets.

The rollout began today and is scheduled to run through December 31, 2026. Media placement is extensive, covering social platforms including X, Meta, Instagram, and YouTube, alongside television broadcasts on Fox Sports. Notably, the campaign will also reach cinema audiences this winter during select screenings of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3. To ensure authenticity, Block collaborated with Square sellers and bitcoin-native creators during production. Since 2018, Block's Cash App has already onboarded more than 24 million active users into the bitcoin ecosystem.

"Our goal with this campaign was to raise public awareness of bitcoin through relatable, every-day scenarios. So much of what we typically hear from the digital currency industry either feels like a lecture — getting lost in the details, and over explaining blockchain technology — or we hear vague platitudes about “the future of money.” With this series we instead tried to meet people where they are. Because many of us can feel that there is something deeply wrong and strange about our current financial systems, even if we can’t quite articulate it. We constantly encounter moments in the world and think to ourselves “That Makes No Sense. But Bitcoin Does.”

The companies involved

Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ) is a global technology company with a focus on financial services. The firm operates a diverse ecosystem of businesses including Square, Cash App, and Bitkey. Square provides a comprehensive suite of commerce solutions, software, and banking services for sellers, while Cash App offers a consumer-facing platform for sending, spending, and investing money. Bitkey serves as the company's self-custody bitcoin wallet solution, completing a circular ecosystem where users can buy, hold, and spend the digital asset.

The campaign was supported by GrandArmy, a creative agency responsible for the conceptual development of the "Bitcoin Does" series. The production also featured Alec Sutherland, an independent director. Block’s market position is defined by its ability to integrate these disparate services; for instance, its "Neighborhoods" network has recently seen significant growth by leveraging the synergy between Square’s merchant base and Cash App’s consumer reach. This integrated approach allows the company to facilitate bitcoin transactions at both the point of sale and the peer-to-peer level.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Block’s strategic moves to deepen its integration of digital assets and traditional banking. In September 2026, we reported that Block Applies for OCC Charter to Launch Builders Bank for Crypto Custody, a move intended to establish a national trust bank. This followed news that Block Scales Neighborhoods Network: Square and Cash App Drive 10x Seller Growth, highlighting the company's success in connecting 30,000 additional sellers to its ecosystem.

Further expanding its consumer capabilities, Block Partners With Nova Credit to Open Cash App Score to External Lenders was a key development in September 2026. On the merchant side, Square’s continued dominance in the retail sector was evidenced when Parsons Bakery Partners With Square Across 48 Locations, demonstrating the platform's scalability for multi-site regional businesses.

What this means

This campaign signals a pivot in the crypto industry from technical evangelism to mainstream consumer marketing. By focusing on the "broken" nature of traditional finance, Block is positioning bitcoin not as a high-risk investment, but as a pragmatic tool for the "unbanked" or "underbanked" and those frustrated by inflation. This puts direct pressure on traditional payment processors and credit card networks. If Block can successfully normalize bitcoin payments at Square-enabled merchants using Cash App balances, it creates a closed-loop payment system that bypasses traditional interchange fees. The primary challenge remains whether marketing can overcome the psychological barrier of price volatility for everyday purchases like coffee or flowers.
