Stockholm-based Matters has emerged from stealth with $5 million in pre-seed funding to challenge traditional banking incentives. By replacing transaction-based fees with a flat subscription and an AI-driven advisory model, the platform aims to align bank profits with consumer financial health, marking a significant shift in how neobanks monetize their user bases.

What was announced

Matters has emerged from stealth with a $5 million pre-seed funding round to launch an AI-native personal finance platform. Based in Stockholm, the company is led by Per Österström and has appointed Lars-Åke Norling as Chair. The platform operates on a neobank model where users pay a flat monthly fee in exchange for an AI Advisor designed to automate savings and encourage conscious spending to help customers reach their financial goals.

A distinctive feature of the Matters model is the redistribution of traditional banking revenue. Instead of the company retaining interchange revenues and FX fees, these are returned to the customer through an accumulated cashback solution. This structure is intended to align the platform’s incentives with the financial wellbeing of its users, focusing on retention and loyalty rather than transaction volume.

The $5 million investment was anchored by Jakob Johansson, with participation from several prominent angel investors including Knut Frängsmyr, Douglas Stark, Johan Bladh, Patrik Tran, and Per Widerstrom. Matters currently employs a team of 14 people. The newly raised capital is earmarked for several key operational milestones, including applying for banking licences and expanding its footprint across the European Union. The company also intends to grow its user base and explore potential strategic acquisitions. A first consumer product is scheduled for release in the coming weeks.

"Banks earn more when consumers manage their money worse. At Matters, we’re purposely travelling in the opposite direction. Our goal is to build a bank that actively makes financial wellbeing available to anyone, not just those who already enjoy it. This angel investment allows us to enact this vision. Keep an eye out for our first consumer product we are launching in the coming weeks."

The companies involved

Matters is the second fintech venture from Per Österström, who previously founded Sambla Group. Under his leadership, Sambla Group grew into the largest consumer loan broker in the Nordics, employing 400 people and generating approximately $200 million in revenue before its sale to Nordic Capital in 2021. The leadership team is bolstered by Chair Lars-Åke Norling, the former CEO of Nordnet. During Norling’s tenure, the European savings and investment platform saw its market capitalization grow tenfold to SEK 80 billion.

The company is supported by a network of investors from major European technology firms. This group includes Knut Frängsmyr, the former Chief Operating Officer at Klarna, and Douglas Stark, a Co-Founder of the micro-mobility company Voi. Other participants in the pre-seed round include Johan Bladh, CEO of the equity investor Röko; Patrik Tran, CEO of the data quality platform Validio; and Per Widerstrom, CEO of Evoke. This backing connects Matters to a broad ecosystem of regulated consumer finance and technical expertise, positioning it within a competitive landscape of established Nordic fintech giants.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has maintained consistent coverage of the fintech sector in which Matters’ investors and leadership have operated, particularly regarding Klarna. Recent reports include Klarna and TAP Air Portugal Expand Partnership to US and Europe for Flexible Flight Payments and the integration of Klarna’s services by other providers, such as when Ecommpay Integrates Klarna to Boost Merchant Checkout Conversion and Flexibility. Further coverage has detailed Klarna’s expansion into luxury and home retail, including Klarna Partners with The White Company to Bring Flexible BNPL Payments to Luxury Homeware and the announcement that Klarna and Wayfair Expand Partnership to Offer 0% APR Financing Across North America.

What this means

The emergence of Matters highlights a growing friction between traditional banking revenue models and consumer-centric AI applications. By replacing interchange and FX fees with a flat subscription, the industry is testing whether transparency can outweigh the allure of "free" banking. This move puts pressure on established neobanks that remain heavily reliant on transaction-based margins, which often benefit from consumer inefficiency. If AI advisors can demonstrably increase personal savings, the value proposition shifts from a transactional tool to a financial health utility. However, the sector faces an open question: will mass-market consumers pay upfront for banking services that have historically been subsidized by hidden costs?
