PayBox, the AI-focused payment vault from MoonPay, has integrated the Kamino protocol to enable decentralized finance (DeFi) activities through conversational AI interfaces. This development allows users to manage lending and borrowing positions on the Solana blockchain directly via ChatGPT and Claude, signaling a significant shift toward AI-driven asset management for non-custodial wallet users.

What was announced

On August 27, 2026, MoonPay announced that its PayBox platform now supports Kamino, one of the largest decentralized finance protocols operating on the Solana network. This integration allows eligible users to supply digital assets to Kamino’s lending markets or borrow against their existing collateral by typing natural language instructions into AI assistants like Claude or ChatGPT. For example, a user can prompt the AI to "supply 500 USDC on Kamino" or "borrow USDC against my SOL," and the system will prepare the transaction for execution.

The service is governed by specific permission rules designed to maintain user control. Users can select "Always Ask" mode, which requires a passkey approval for every individual transaction, or "Autonomous" mode, which permits the AI to act within pre-defined limits. PayBox utilizes threshold cryptography and secure enclaves to ensure that private keys are never exposed to the AI assistant or MoonPay itself. This non-custodial architecture ensures that funds remain under the user's control at all times.

While the integration is live at paybox.sh, it is subject to significant geographic restrictions. The Kamino plugin is currently unavailable to users located in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, or Australia. Availability in other regions may vary based on local jurisdictions, specific digital assets, and individual product eligibility requirements.

"Kamino has built one of Solana’s leading lending platforms, and bringing it into PayBox is a major expansion of what people can do with money through AI. Users can now go from a simple instruction to an onchain lending position without leaving Claude or ChatGPT, while PayBox manages permissions and secure execution. This is an important step toward making AI the interface for financial services."

The companies involved

MoonPay is the corporate parent behind PayBox, which it launched in July 2026 as a dedicated payment vault for AI assistants. Under the leadership of Founder & CEO Ivan Soto-Wright, MoonPay has positioned PayBox as a bridge between Large Language Models (LLMs) and blockchain infrastructure, using a custom connector to link AI tools with on-chain execution without compromising private credentials. Kamino is a prominent decentralized finance protocol specifically built for the Solana ecosystem. It focuses on providing lending, liquidity, and leverage services. In Kamino’s lending markets, assets are supplied to shared pools, and interest rates are dynamically adjusted based on borrower demand and market utilization. Solana, the underlying blockchain for both PayBox and Kamino, is known for its high throughput and low transaction costs, which are essential for the real-time execution of AI-generated financial instructions. The integration also involves major AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, which serve as the primary user interfaces for the PayBox vault.

What FF News has reported before

The intersection of AI and financial services has been a recurring theme in recent months. FF News recently highlighted Wealthtime Research Reveals 28% of Clients Now Use AI Tools to Support Financial Advice, underscoring the growing consumer appetite for AI-integrated wealth management. On the infrastructure side, we covered how KTX Launches AI Skills Kit to Bridge Gap Between Market Intelligence and Trade Execution, a move similar to PayBox’s attempt to link intelligence with action.

Solana’s ecosystem has also seen increased activity regarding stablecoin efficiency, as seen when Finassets.io Launches USDC on Solana to Slash Crypto Payment Costs for Merchants. Additionally, the security and identity layer of on-chain finance continues to evolve, evidenced by our report that Sumsub and Caliber Launch Reusable On-Chain Identity for Tokenized Real Estate.

What this means

This integration moves the industry closer to a "headless" financial experience where the traditional banking app UI is replaced by a chat box. By abstracting the complexities of DeFi—such as connecting wallets, managing gas fees, and navigating liquidity pools—into natural language, MoonPay is challenging the relevance of traditional fintech dashboards. However, the heavy geographic restrictions in the US, UK, and EU highlight the persistent regulatory friction facing autonomous AI agents in finance. The market is now entering a phase where the primary competition is no longer between different protocols, but between different interfaces for accessing those protocols. The success of this model will depend on whether users trust AI agents to manage risk as effectively as they manage simple payments.
