Matera Workspace Launches to Bridge Fiat and Digital Assets Without Core Banking Replacement
By Lauren Towner · 19 October 2026

Matera has launched Matera Workspace, a platform designed to let banks and credit unions integrate digital assets like stablecoins and crypto directly alongside fiat currencies. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant shift in how legacy institutions can pilot digital asset services without the prohibitive cost and risk of a full core banking system replacement.
What was announced
Matera Workspace is an extensible application platform that addresses the operational hurdles of digital asset adoption, such as ledger balancing and counterparty management. At its core is the "Digital Twin," a real-time ledger already used for instant payments. This technology allows US dollars, euros, stablecoins, and crypto to be held as balances with equal standing. Consequently, a bank can display USDC next to traditional US dollars in a single account view, removing the need for a separate "crypto tab."
The platform bundles several components: the Digital Twin ledger, Matera’s X9.150 Secure Payment QR, and pre-built custody integrations with leading market providers. By providing these as a single package, Matera aims to simplify the vendor review process for financial institutions. Integration is described as lightweight, connecting to existing core systems without requiring a migration. Matera claims a working pilot can be live in approximately one hour, with no core migration and nothing to remove if a project does not move forward.
Additionally, Workspace features a trade engine that allows customers to transact directly with their bank, keeping trades within the institution's existing regulatory posture. The platform also includes a declarative screen builder and AI-authored workflows, allowing banks to extend the platform and build new products on top of the existing infrastructure. Matera Workspace is available now for banks, credit unions, and fintechs.
"Banks aren't short on interest in digital assets - they're short on a way to start that doesn't begin with a core replacement and an eighteen-month business case. Workspace removes the first step as an obstacle: there's nothing to rip out, nothing to migrate, and nothing to unwind if a pilot doesn't earn its place. That changes the question from 'can we afford to try this?' to 'what do we launch first?'"

The companies involved
Matera is a prominent provider of modern banking technology, specializing in solutions that bridge the gap between legacy systems and modern digital demands. The company has established a significant presence in the financial technology sector, particularly through its "Digital Twin" technology, which provides a real-time ledger layer that sits atop traditional core banking infrastructures. This approach allows financial institutions to process instant payments and manage complex digital assets without the risk associated with "rip-and-replace" core migrations.
Matera’s market position is defined by its focus on interoperability and speed to market, catering to banks, credit unions, and fintechs that need to modernize their offerings rapidly. With leadership including co-founder Carlos Netto, who serves as CEO North America, the company has expanded its footprint by focusing on the practicalities of digital asset integration. By offering tools like the X9.150 Secure Payment QR and partnering with major industry players, Matera has positioned itself as a facilitator for traditional institutions looking to enter the digital asset space while maintaining their existing regulatory and operational postures.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has followed Matera’s strategic moves in the digital asset and payments space closely. In August 2026, we covered how Matera and Utila Partner to Enable Secure Digital Asset Custody for Global Banks, a move that laid the groundwork for the custody integrations seen in the Workspace launch. This followed the company's efforts to standardize payment technology, as seen when Matera Launches Open Source X9.150 Payment QR Code Implementation to Drive Industry Adoption. Earlier, in June 2025, we reported on how Matera and Circle Join Forces to Turn Stablecoins into a Payment Method Integrated with Core Banking Systems. The foundational technology for these developments was detailed when Matera Publishes New Whitepaper on Leveraging Digital Twin Technology to Supercharge Legacy Core Systems in February 2025.
What this means
This announcement signals a move toward the "normalization" of digital assets within traditional banking interfaces. By treating stablecoins and fiat as ledger equals, Matera is challenging the industry standard of siloed crypto offerings. This puts pressure on traditional core banking providers who have been slow to integrate digital asset capabilities, as well as "crypto-native" platforms that lack deep integration with legacy banking workflows. The success of this model will likely depend on whether banks can overcome regulatory hesitation, but by lowering the technical barrier to entry, Matera has effectively shifted the bottleneck from IT capability to institutional risk appetite.
