Mastercard has unveiled a transformed Experience Centre at its regional headquarters in Dubai, marking 40 years of operations in the UAE. For fintech professionals, this facility serves as a critical hub for the Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA) region, providing a physical environment to test AI use cases and co-develop digital payment solutions across 81 markets.

What was announced

The redesigned Mastercard Experience Centre, located in Dubai Internet City, is structured into three distinct zones designed to facilitate different stages of product development and client engagement. The Discovery zone is tailored for executive briefings and high-level strategy sessions. The Experience zone utilizes immersive demonstrations to showcase Mastercard’s current technology stack, allowing partners to evaluate applications in real-time. Finally, the Engagement zone provides dedicated collaboration rooms where product teams and customers can move from ideation to structured workshop development.

The facility is intended to serve a broad spectrum of the financial ecosystem, including issuing banks, merchants, early-stage fintech founders, and government regulators. A significant focus of the new centre is the integration of artificial intelligence; visitors can explore specific use cases emerging from Mastercard’s global Centre for AI and Advanced Technology, which is also based in Dubai. Beyond commercial applications, the centre will host the Mastercard Academy and engage with academic institutions through research projects and a planned student internship program starting in 2027. This transformation follows the original opening of the centre in 2018 and aims to accelerate the movement of value across the digital economy in the EEMEA region.

"Over the past four decades, Mastercard has grown alongside the UAE, a country defined by ambition, partnership and a determination to keep moving forward. The Mastercard Experience Centre reflects that same spirit, bringing our technology closer to the people shaping the future of commerce."

The companies involved

Mastercard is a global technology company in the payments industry, operating as a primary processor of transactions between the banks of merchants and the card-issuing banks or credit unions of purchasers. With a presence in the UAE spanning four decades, the company has established itself as a cornerstone of the regional financial infrastructure. Mastercard's operations in Dubai serve as the strategic anchor for its Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA) division, a territory encompassing 81 diverse markets.

The company has historically transitioned from a traditional credit card network into a multi-rail payments leader, investing heavily in digital assets, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. Its presence in Dubai Internet City places it within a major technology hub, facilitating direct interaction with the region's growing fintech and startup community. As a publicly traded entity, Mastercard remains one of the most influential players in the global movement of value, competing directly with other major card networks while increasingly positioning itself as a technology partner for governments and digital-first financial institutions.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively tracked Mastercard’s strategic shifts toward emerging technologies and regional growth. Recently, the company has focused on securing the digital asset space, as seen when Mastercard Launches Stablecoin Security to Combat Fraud in Digital Asset Payments. The firm’s research also highlights the massive potential of its EEMEA footprint; a Mastercard Report: Africa’s Digital Economy to Hit $1.5 Trillion by 2030 Amid Rising Cyber Threats underscored the need for the very infrastructure the Dubai centre provides. Additionally, Mastercard continues to expand its reach through partnerships, such as when Stoa Partners with Stripe and Mastercard to Launch Virtual Card Perks for Savers, demonstrating the company's role in enabling niche fintech offerings.

What this means

The expansion of the Dubai Experience Centre signals a shift in how global payment networks maintain dominance: by becoming indispensable R&D partners rather than just service providers. As the EEMEA region experiences rapid digital transformation, Mastercard is under pressure to ensure its rails remain the default choice against local domestic schemes and emerging non-card payment methods. By anchoring its AI and advanced technology research in Dubai, Mastercard is betting that proximity to regional regulators and fintech hubs will provide a competitive moat. The move raises questions for competitors about whether physical innovation hubs are still the most effective way to capture market share in an increasingly decentralized digital economy.
