Firstwork has secured $15 million in Series A funding to scale its AI-driven frontline workforce platform. For fintech and HR tech professionals, this highlights a shift from passive systems of record to active AI agents that automate complex compliance and payroll onboarding, directly addressing the labor shortages currently crippling the healthcare, logistics, and energy sectors.

What was announced

Firstwork announced a $15 million Series A round led by Earlybird Venture Capital, with participation from Legion VC, Deel Ventures, and existing backers Gradient and Y Combinator. This brings the company's total funding to $20 million. The platform is designed to solve the "leaky bucket" problem in frontline hiring, where candidates are lost during cumbersome background checks, right-to-work verifications, and payroll setup spread across disconnected systems.

Firstwork’s AI agents sit on top of existing HR, payroll, and screening systems to move workers from application to their first shift. The platform currently supports over 150,000 frontline workers every month. Customers such as Deel, Job&Talent, Relay, Wonolo, and BGSF have reported reducing the time spent on manual onboarding tasks by up to 90%. In one instance, the platform helped a customer triple the number of qualified applicants who successfully reached their first shift.

The funding will be used to grow Firstwork's applied AI, AI research, and engineering teams, as well as its go-to-market operations across the United States and Europe. The company also intends to extend its AI agents into broader operational workflows, including re-verification, credential renewals, recurring training, and ongoing compliance management.

"The systems employers rely on were built to record what happened, not to actually do the work,"

Vardhan Kapoor, co-founder and CEO of Firstwork

The companies involved

Firstwork was founded in 2024 by Vardhan Kapoor and Shubham Choudhary. The founders bring significant experience from the frontline labor and employment infrastructure sectors; Kapoor previously led APAC at Remitly and strategy at Deliveroo Singapore, while Choudhary was a Director of Engineering at Deel and helped build Rippling’s global employment infrastructure. This background is reflected in Firstwork's focus on the intersection of labor markets and the technical systems that support them.

Earlybird Venture Capital, which led the round, is a prominent investment firm that has appeared in previous FF News reports. Y Combinator, the well-known startup accelerator, is a frequent subject of coverage with 29 prior mentions in our data. Other participants include Gradient, an AI-focused venture fund, and Deel Ventures. The involvement of Deel Ventures is particularly notable given Firstwork’s focus on automating the compliance and onboarding workflows that often bottleneck global employment platforms.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has tracked the increasing integration of AI within workforce and financial operations. Recently, we covered how Cozmo AI Launches AI Workforce to automate property claims, reflecting a similar trend of using AI agents to replace manual administrative tasks. Our coverage of the broader fintech ecosystem includes Jeeves Secures $110M to Scale Stablecoin-Native Banking and nsave Secures FCA EMI License, both of which highlight the ongoing modernization of global financial and employment infrastructure through specialized digital platforms.

What this means

This announcement signals a transition in the HR tech stack from "systems of record" to "systems of action." For years, the industry has focused on storing data; Firstwork’s success suggests the market is now demanding tools that execute workflows autonomously. By targeting the gap between an offer and a first shift, Firstwork is attacking a major friction point in the global economy. This puts traditional background check and HR software providers under pressure to either evolve their AI capabilities or risk becoming mere databases for more agile, agentic platforms. The move toward automated compliance is no longer a luxury but a necessity for high-volume employers facing chronic labor shortages.
